Rosette Gonzales The Glendale News-Press was a source for national and global news in the 1950s, but the domestic content of the inner pages developed greatly. Suburbia boomed, and consumer spending grew. Pages were filled with advertisements for televisions, casual attire and -- most of all -- automobiles. An additional insert called the Foothill Living Section commonly came with the paper. This magazine-style insert was the essential guide to domestic living, covering real estate, gardens, television shows and homemaking.

I am very sorry you have discontinued Dan Kimber's column. I found it interesting and enlightening, and addressed subjects of community interest. I have looked forward each week to reading this column. I still miss reading Will Rogers' column. I was sorry that one was discontinued also. You seem to cancel the most interesting writers. I hope you will reconsider, and return the Kimber's column to the Glendale News-Press. Lucile Leard Glendale

Rosette Gonzales By the 1930s, the Glendale News-Press was a comprehensive news source bringing worldwide information to the doorsteps of its readers, while also reporting what was around the corner. As a porthole to the world, 22 to 30 pages long, readers often subscribed to the newspaper or took a daily copy for just 3 cents. Although the early part of the decade was marked with uncertainty, a hopeful tone was struck in front-page headlines. "Employment Shows Improvement in Glendale," read a Feb. 22, 1931 headline, even though the following year was one of the hardesthitting years of the Depression.
