Bailiff had something against Capri pants I had an appointment on Sept. 27 to appear in Los Angeles County Superior Court in Glendale. The "why" of it doesn't matter. On the courtroom door was a sign indicating that appropriate attire must be worn in court. OK, fine. I was wearing a tailored shirt and calf-length Capri pants. Upon entering the courtroom, the bailiff asked me to step outside. Whatever for, I wondered. Well, he asked me where I Iived.

I'd like to thank the people of Glendale for not caring at all. And for not protesting a bit. And for not threatening to burn so much as one copy of the Koran. We managed to peacefully allow members of the Islamic Center of Glendale to publicly celebrate their new religious center. And we did it without any of our citizens claiming they got a personal message from God asking them to promote hate. Look at us! Proving to the rest of the country that people with different belief systems can get along peacefully.

I thought about titling this column "restarting the presses," as it's been more than two months since I last wrote in this space. This is not because there's been nothing to write about. Lord knows journalists have the ability to wax on regarding nearly any subject, no matter how picayune. No, it's been for far more mundane reasons: staff changes, vacations, and just plain overwork. And, like all other things, writing a column is a habit, one done best if done as regularly as possible.

It seems to me the boys who set the fire and their parents should be responsible for replacing the equipment ("Fire destroys play area," Aug. 27) — and maybe for providing comparable equipment for another park, too. Community Services and Parks Director George Chapjian should not be required to find any money in his department's budget. If a lightning strike had started the fire, it would make sense for the expense to fall to the city. In this case, the city should bear no pain because of these boys' deeds.

All four candidates for the special 43rd Assembly District election April 13 are scheduled to appear live Thursday on “The Larry Zarian Show.” Glendale News-Press city editor Jason Wells will moderate a debate-style discussion with Democrats Chahe Keuroghelian, Mike Gatto and Nayiri Nahadbedian, and the lone Republican, Sunder Ramani, as they enter the final stretch of the special election. All four candidates are vying to fill the seat left vacant by now-Los Angeles City Councilman Paul Krekorian.

I am writing in response to the March 19 letter by Robert Morrison (“Where’s officials’ response on smoking?”) who asked what Glendale Community College administrators are doing about smoking on campus. A draft of a new campus smoking policy is being finalized for presentation to the Administrative Affairs Committee. Finalization of the draft will ensure the proposed policy is thoroughly reviewed and all areas of concern, as well as proposed recommendations, are addressed.

Thank you for reviewing Burbank resident Carolyn Hennesy’s Pandora book for tweens (“Book Review: Girl power reigns in series,” March 24). On the same day that John Drayman’s letter to the editor (“Store closing is not the apocalypse,” March 24) reminding folks that retail is not dead here in Montrose, we find, once again, the Glendale News-Press leaving out area brick-and-mortar stores in suggesting to readers to shop online providers. Why was the oldest children’s bookstore in the country that has served the community for more than 43 years, Once Upon a Time, not suggested as a place to find Hennesy’s series?

On the eve of a complete redesign of the websites for the Burbank Leader and Glendale News-Press, I had the benefit of attending South by Southwest Interactive. Perhaps more known for the music festival, the interactive portion of SXSW in Austin, Texas, mid-March hosted some 12,000 people for exhibitions, discussions, panels, parties and, for the most part, all things tech. As the web editor for the Burbank Leader and the Glendale News-Press, I was in heaven talking Twitter, Web Hooks and live streaming — even though I didn’t get an invite from Ashton Kutcher for the VIP Foursquare party.

I read with surprise and befuddlement that Glendale officials, in an effort to promote business in our fair city (“IN DEPTH: Branding Glendale with a new image,” March 20), committed to spending $146,000 on a marketing firm in — Tennessee. Practically speaking, I wonder how much of the budget will be used for airfare, hotel rooms, car rentals and meals for North Star executives and employees visiting for research, consultations and presentations. But more importantly, I wonder how the city could conclude that no one in Glendale — home of global entertainment companies and other thriving businesses large and small, as well as countless talented, creative and insightful individuals — is capable of creating a sophisticated, compelling brand identity or an effective marketing campaign.
