A nation of desperate and grieving people showed the fervency of their faith this past weekend. Haitians mourned an archbishop, prayed in an open-air revival and, later in the day, witnessed a miracle. But some have said that the fate that has befallen Haiti is the ire of God. Others, like Archbishop of Santo Domingo Cardinal Nicolas de Jesus Lopez Rodriguez, “has firmly rejected the idea that the tragedy in Haiti was a punishment from God,” according to an article in Catholic News Agency.

What is theology exactly? Is it the study of God? The written Word? Theology actually is the study of God and His relationship with the universe. It is the study of the doctrine of divinity and the specific form and system of this study. Theology is something we study to pass the truths of God on. It took me five years to attain a degree in theology, only three to become a psychotherapist. There is much depth to the study of theology. What about the definition of faith? Faith is the only avenue of coming near to God. You cannot overemphasize the fact that faith is essential to one’s relationship with God. Without faith, it is impossible to please God (Hebrews 11:6)

I read the newspaper Saturday and opened up to the Faith section, and what a treasure I found (“Faith in finding the right job,” July 11). I will always keep the articles presented today in a specially dedicated book (I will name it, “God Brought Good Out of It.”) Thank you for asking all of our faith leaders in the area to write about unemployment and making sense of the hardship. Every one of our faith leaders had insight that would be helpful in leading a person during the frightening and disheartening time called “unemployment.
