Truck noise concerns must be heard Freeway-adjacent residents, such as those in the Rancho, can sympathize with their brethren who are impacted by the Foothill (210) Freeway and the disruptive truck-braking noise as described in "No to Jake brake, please" (July 10). Rancho residents have waited for years for new sound walls where none exist, or upgraded ones where aging ones stand, to mitigate brain-rattling noise in the area around one of the busiest freeway interchanges in the entire world ?

Paul M. Anderson GLENDALE -- When Glendale Police Lt. Don Meredith went out to see the new signs on the Ventura Freeway memorializing slain Officer Charles Lazzaretto it brought a tear to his eye. I have an alternative solution to the Denny's Diner dilemma. Build one in Burbank where the Bicycle Club used to be, on 1st Street next to the Black Angus. The Bicycle Club used to have a parking lot, so there should be sufficient parking for a Denny's. It would not be in Glendale, but it would be freeway close to Glendale. And there would also be a lot of people driving to and from on Glenoaks Boulevard and San Fernando Road. Erect a high enough sign that would be visible from both directions on the Golden State Freeway, where there are a lot of people traveling north and south, and put up some billboards, too. The Burbank Airport is close by. The Media Center is right there.

Ron Magneson's family moved to Walnut Drive in 1948 when he was four years old, and remained there until they were forced to leave in 1964 by construction of the Glendale (State Route 2) Freeway. “It was a very short street,” he recalled. “It was one block long, running between east Chevy Chase Drive and Eden Avenue. The original home in the area was across the street and was built by the Brown family. Eleanore Drive was named after Mr. Brown's wife.” Lilac Lane was named for the lilacs she planted on the hill adjacent to the new road, which originally opened onto Walnut, he added.

GLENDALE — Los Angeles County shoppers will pay an extra half-cent on their purchases starting today, when the sales tax will jump to nearly 10% as part of an effort to fund regional public transportation developments, including new carpool lanes on a local stretch of the Golden State (5) Freeway. The Measure R sales tax, approved by more than two-thirds of voters in November, is expected to generate $40 billion over 30 years for a series of Metropolitan Transportation Authority rail, bus, highway and road projects throughout the county, but will also add a burden on citizens and businesses during the recession, officials said.
