Karen S. Kim Gregg's Artistic Homes might have lost its chance to develop the Oakmont View V hillside property, but over the past 70 years, the Gregg family has built more than its fair share of Glendale. More than 3,000 homes in the city have been developed by the Greggs since Alice Lee Gregg started the business in 1934. Gregg homes are mainly in northwest and northeast Glendale and La Crescenta. "In those areas, it's hard to drive around without seeing one of our homes," Vice President Bob Gregg said.

KATHERINE YAMADA Jessup Certified Farms, established in 1919 by Roger W. Jessup with just 40 cows, brought acclaim to Glendale as one of the largest individually owned dairies in the United States. By the 1960s, more than 1,200 cows were milked twice a day on the 27-acre dairy. Jessup was a young man living in Salt Lake City, working at a newspaper and raising a few cattle on the side, when he met and fell in love with Marguerite Rice, who had just spent the winter in San Diego with an aunt and uncle.

Burt Bacharach was never a fan of rock 'n' roll, even as the distinctive, graceful love songs he wrote with lyricist Hal David began sharing space on the frenetic '60s and early '70s pop charts. His metier wasn't blues or psychedelia but smooth drama and sophistication in songs that bounced with the energy of the time: "The Look of Love," "What's New, Pussycat?" and "Alfie. " The composer continued to score hits after the acrimonious breakup of the Bacharach-David partnership, which had propelled the likes of Dionne Warwick, Tom Jones and Celia Black into the pop stratosphere - first with then-wife Carole Bayer Sager and, more recently, Elvis Costello.

If anyone worried James Ellroy might dumb down the salty language laced throughout his crime novels for an appearance at Glendale Community College this week, they wouldn't have been disappointed. Within 90 seconds of taking the stage, the author of "L.A. Confidential" and "The Black Dahlia" had referenced sex, drugs and physical anatomy, a warm-up for the searing commentary on liberals and hipsters that was to follow. It was a refreshingly unabashed articulation of a unique worldview that has produced one of the most distinctive voices on the local literary scene.

Fans of Hong Kong movies expect great fights, beautiful cinematography and charismatic performers, but Peter Ho-sun Chan's "Dragon" is one of the first HK movies in years to experiment with a touch of nonstandard narrative storytelling. Donnie Yen - who replaced Jet Li as the preeminent HK martial arts actor after the latter slowed down - plays Jin-xi, a simple small-town papermaker circa 1917. When two thugs attack a neighbor, the timid Jin-xi bravely joins the fray and manages to kill the bad guys, seemingly through good luck.
