Hoover High School?s annual Baccalaureate event is set for 4:30 p.m. Sunday at St. Mark?s Episcopal Church, 1020 N. Brand Blvd., Glendale. This event is a nondenominational, inspirational tradition for Hoover graduates and families. Hoover?s Annual Awards Night will be at 7 p.m. June 10 in the Hoover Auditorium. Graduating seniors will be receiving many scholarships and achievement awards. Finals for all Hoover students are scheduled from June 17 to 19. Graduation ceremonies will be at 6:30 p.m. June 19 at the Hoover High School field.

Montrose resident J.P. Wammack, who was dressed as Abraham Lincoln, played the past president’s favorite song, “Oh Susanna,” on a harmonica in the Hoover High School library Friday as history students clapped and sang along. Wammack, a Lincoln impersonator, told the high school students that the president played the harmonica during a six-week trip on the Mississippi River to New Orleans, where Lincoln and a friend had planned to sell food to make money. “We sold the goods at a profit,” he said in character.

LOCAL GIRL SCOUTS MARCH IN TOURNAMENT Jennelle Fong , of Glendale, and Brianne Johnson , of La Crescenta, are among 39 Gold Award Girl Scouts from the new Girl Scouts of Greater Los Angeles who will march down Colorado Boulevard in the Rose Parade on New Year?s Day. This is the 25th appearance for Girl Scouts who joined the elite Tournament Troop in 1984. The Troop, consisting of Eagle Scouts from The San Gabriel Valley Council and Gold Award Girl Scouts from Girl Scouts of Greater Los Angeles, has the honor of carrying the banners announcing the award-winning floats throughout the 5.5-mile parade route.

Chatter filled the air in a Hoover High School ceramics class as students sculpted on potter’s wheels and moved between workstations Thursday. The atmosphere was busy and productive but simultaneously calming, junior Katherine Brouwer said. “It’s my most relaxing class of the day,” she said. “When you’re pounding the clay, it gets the stress out.” Thursday’s beginner class was making clay boxes that had to incorporate a natural theme, a task that some students had excelled at, one crafting a multilayered bonsai tree onto the lid of his box and another using a lizard-shaped form, as if one had crawled onto the lid. “It helps the students to think spatially, as opposed to working on a [two-dimensional]

With teenage girls screaming and tiaras shining, students in suits and high heels took center stage Friday night at Moyse Stadium. The introduction of the homecoming courts from Hoover and Glendale high schools was the start of a night filled with battling bands, teams and cheers at the football game between the rivals, which share the same home field and homecoming game. Princes and princesses from both schools rode into the stadium on golf carts wearing sashes, corsages and boutonnieres, and were later escorted in front of their respective audiences by parents or close friends.

Lake Glendale at Verdugo Park is the site of the third annual Kiwanis Incredible Duck Splash from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. today. ?But there is no lake at Verdugo Park,? everybody always tells me. Well, there will be today along with several hundred special rubber ducks ready to ride the waves. Those who have purchased the ducks are vying for prizes in support of the Glendale Kiwanis Club?s charity work. Bands, special food booths and souvenir shops, plus raffle tables will be set up to add to the fun, so bring the kids.

Seniors can cool off at adult centers Senior citizens and frail adults can escape the heat during the weekend at the Adult Recreation Center and Sparr Heights Community Center. Those who attend the Glendale centers — which offer air-conditioned rooms and iced water — can watch television or movies, play board games and socialize with friends. Lunch is available for a suggested donation of $2.50 for adults 60 and older. Reservations are required and can be made by calling the preferred center.
