Seniors can cool off at adult centers Senior citizens and frail adults can escape the heat during the weekend at the Adult Recreation Center and Sparr Heights Community Center. Those who attend the Glendale centers ? which offer air-conditioned rooms and iced water ? can watch television or movies, play board games and socialize with friends. Lunch is available for a suggested donation of $2.50 for adults 60 and older. Reservations are required and can be made by calling the preferred center.

DOWNTOWN GLENDALE — The school board approved the appointments of six secondary school administrators at its Tuesday night meeting, filling posts that became vacant as other school district administrators moved up or on to other things. Deb Rinder, who graduated from Glendale High School and worked as an administrator there five years ago, was selected as the new principal of Glendale High. She fills the post most recently occupied by Kathy Fundukian, who became assistant superintendent for elementary education in June when Alice Petrossian left the Glendale Unified School District.

With some time and guidance, students in John Ghazarian?s auto maintenance class at Hoover High School are turning would-be junk into a fully functioning automobile. On Tuesday, the dozen students in the summer school class, which falls under the Regional Occupation Program, worked on rebuilding a Chevrolet 350 engine that Ghazarian picked up at a junkyard. ?Their job right now is to assemble the whole thing completely,? he said. During the first week of class, students watched videos about how a car works.

Minutes before more than 500 Hoover High School graduates walked onto the school?s athletic field, Principal Kevin Welsh found time for one last lesson to the class of 2008. ?This is a great moment for you and your family,? he said. ?Just remember to turn off your cell phones.? The reminder came amid a drone of text messages received and the din of excitement felt by the 528 seniors. At 6 p.m., Welsh led his seniors through the halls of Hoover toward Ferguson Field as the school orchestra played ?

At a 2,000-plus-student school like Hoover High, it’s not always easy keeping students in the loop about all the classes and activities that are going on. So this week, arts educators launched the school’s first-ever Arts Advocacy Week on campus, to spread the word to the school’s own students about the varied arts offerings happening on campus. “We want the students on campus to be aware of what we do,” said Mary Anna Pomonis, a Hoover art instructor who also advises the school’s extracurricular art club.

The Glendale Youth Orchestra and Southern California Mormon Choir are joining forces for the first time for a one-night performance Tuesday at the Alex Theatre. The concert will feature about 70 members of the 54-year-old choir and the orchestra?s 37 young musicians who range in ages 11 to 18. ?The choir sounds awesome, and the orchestra is amazing,? conductor Brad Keimach said. The choir decided to collaborate with the youngsters after a couple of members came to hear the orchestra perform, Keimach said.
