Organized labor is divided when it comes to having to choose between two of its longtime allies, Democratic Reps. Brad Sherman and Howard Berman, who are competing for the same newly drawn San Fernando Valley congressional district seat. On Wednesday, Berman scored the endorsement of Service Employees International Union California, which represents some 700,000 janitors, social and healthcare workers, and school, city, county and state employees. Brad Sherman and Howard Berman could hardly be accused of ducking debates.  The veteran Democratic congressmen,  vying for the same San Fernando Valley seat in the House of Representatives,  have met to argue their cases at least five times since the first of the year.  Next up is  a candidates debate Thursday in Granada Hills, starting at 7 p.m. at the Valley Academy of Arts and Sciences.  After that, there's an April 30 forum at Cal State Northridge. ...

Don't look now, but the national pastime has just become fodder for one of the hottest political contests in town - the race between Democratic Reps. Howard Berman and Brad Sherman for a San Fernando Valley congressional seat. Both candidates made appearances at separate Little League opening day ceremonies Saturday morning. First up was Sherman, who rose early to help the Sunrise Little League celebrate the start of its season  in Woodland Hills. A couple of hours later, Berman joined former Dodger great Ron Cey  in Sherman Oaks, where the Sherman Oaks Little League was kicking off its season and celebrating its 60 th year.

Susan Shelley, one of three Republicans in an election battle dominated by Democratic Reps. Brad Sherman and Howard Berman, scored a big-name endorsement recently -- that of the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Assn. “We believe you will be an excellent representative for taxpayers,”  Jarvis leader Kris Vosburgh wrote in a letter informing Shelley  of backing by the group's political action committee. The association is  named after the late leader of the “taxpayers revolt” that resulted in voters' approving the property levy-slashing Proposition 13 in 1978, and its endorsement is often coveted by candidates describing themselves as fiscally conservative.

Two veteran congressmen fighting for their political lives have amassed millions as they battle for a single San Fernando Valley seat, dwarfing the war chests in most other hot House races in Southern California this year. Rep. Howard Berman has out-raised fellow Democratic Rep. Brad Sherman recently, but Sherman had more cash left to spend - about $4 million to Berman's nearly $2.5 million - new campaign filings show. A "super PAC" that supports Berman's candidacy reported large contributions from two Los Angeles-area business titans, according to reports filed with the Federal Election Commission . Sherman started the race for the newly drawn, strongly Democratic district well ahead of Berman, having stockpiled cash from earlier campaigns.

The Democratic slugfest underway in California's 30th Congressional District is the product of two political developments of recent years: the open primary and nonpartisan redistricting. The former means that the two top finishers in the upcoming congressional race will face each other again in the fall, even if both are from the same political party; the latter has resulted in two titans of the Southern California Democratic Party having to face each other. Rep. Howard Berman and Rep. Brad Sherman are admirable public officials with long and impressive records of service.

Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Burbank) joined California Sens. Dianne Feinstein  and Barbara Boxer in introducing legislation on Monday to try and provide Los Angeles County residents a respite from helicopter noise. The Los Angeles Residential Helicopter Noise Relief Act would require the Federal Aviation Administration to establish regulations on flight paths and minimum altitudes for helicopter flights in the county, Schiff said. “Residents living in Glendale, Pasadena, the Valley, the Hollywood Hills, West Hollywood and other areas are especially affected by intrusive, disruptive and often non-emergency related helicopter traffic above their neighborhoods,” Schiff said in a statement.
