Edgar Melik-Stepanyan Catie Rohrig said this Glendale Senior Softball All-Star team is doing its own thing. It's not putting any pressure on itself to match the success of past Glendale Senior squads, and neither are its fans because this year is completely different in more ways than one. Only one player -- Meghann Muirhead -- is back from last year's team that advanced to the World Series, and a new ensemble of...

SAN MARINO — The Foothill All-Stars did everything they could to keep pace with Quartz Hill during Tuesday’s championship game of the Section 2 9-10 Softball Tournament at Huntington School in San Marino, even taking the lead late in the game. But with three outs between Foothill and the division playoffs, it was Quartz Hill getting the last word with a six-run top of the sixth that led to a 17-12 win, the second over Foothill with the title on the line in as many days.

Edgar Melik-Stepanyan The fun stopped in the fourth inning. Smiles turned into frowns, heads dropped and shoulders shrugged. Reality set in on the Glendale Senior Softball All-Star team in Tuesday's Little League Section 2 Tournament game against San Marino. There wasn't a lot to smile about when the District 17 representative was dominating at the plate and in the circle. -- San Marino 0 0 0 9 0 5 -- 14 13 0 Glendale 0 0 0 0 0 0 -- 0 3 1 -- -- SAN MARINO IP H R ER BB K Clark 6 3 0 0 1 4 -- -- GLENDALE IP H R ER BB K DiConti 3.1 5 7 7 4 4 Muirhead 2 7 7 6 1 1 Wingett 0.2 1 0 0 0 0 Totals 6 13 14 13 5 5 -- -- WP-- Clark (1-0)

Erik Boal Little League District 16 has always represented itself well during all-star competition, with one Major Softball, one Junior Softball and two Senior Softball teams reaching the World Series in the past six years. And from those four trips, the local all-star squads recorded one fifth- and two third-place finishes, in addition to capturing a Senior Softball championship in 2001 in Jeffersontown, Ky. Fabian, a member of the Foothill 9-10 All-Star Softball team, didn’t let the pressure get to her during her biggest plate appearance of the playoffs. Fabian grounded a two-run single to center to give Foothill a 4-3 victory against San Fernando in an opening-round game of the Section 2 Tournament on Friday night at Huntington Middle School.
