Pet food sales in North America and revenue growth in the developing world were bright spots in 2010 for Nestle, S.A., with U.S. headquarters in Glendale, company officials reported Thursday. Leaders of the Swiss company said that despite a rise in the cost of raw materials, such as coffee and cocoa, they anticipate revenue growth of between 5% and 6% in 2011. “The times of today is like a Rubik’s cube,” Chief Executive Paul Bulcke said in a meeting with the press in Vevey, Switzerland.

C huck A. Bausback was 8 years old when Bob Hope Airport opened in 1930 as United Airport. The 87-year-old moved with his family to La Crescenta in 1928. He graduated from Glendale High School because La Crescenta High School hadn't opened yet. When the airport opened, his father, Charles L. Bausback, owned the coffee shop on the ground level from 1930 to 1940. A few doors down was a banquet hall that seated 250 people, Bausback said. Upstairs was the Sky Room Restaurant.

I have an index card box on my desk. I carry Post-It Notes and small notepads with me everywhere I go. When I see something that strikes me, or am spontaneously blessed with some great epiphany, I jot it down and throw it into the box. The girls call it my Idea Box. I like having the answers to all of life’s mysteries at my fingertips. Here is but a brief sampling of my more brilliant, and not so brilliant, insights. The person who first came up with the term “muffin tops” to describe my chubby waistline overhang is an observant genius and should be working with Ben & Jerry developing new flavors of ice cream.

Living in the Danish city of Aarhus, Mia Pedersen, Jens Thorup and Morten Eriksen’s favorite thing to do was eat ice cream. And like most ice cream lovers, they had their favorite joint to go to. For the trio, this was Paradis ice cream. In Denmark there are 29 locations, and two in Aarhus. “We were fans/customers of Paradis,” said Pedersen. “That would be our favorite treat.” Having lived in Aarhus most of their lives, the trio had steady jobs in sales and real estate and their own apartments.

Reporting on polling results generated by those with a vested interest in extending the 710 Freeway without disclosing the questions used in the survey might make for dry reporting, but it’s important (“Poll touts 710 tunnel,” July 10). It is easy to skew results based upon how the questions are framed. Would you prefer vanilla ice cream with a cherry on top or strawberry ice cream with a dead rat? Vanilla please. Though polling among cats revealed they prefer strawberry by a margin of 2 to 1. How would the polling be affected if respondents knew that every third vehicle on the 710 was a semi truck carrying shipping containers from the port of Long Beach?

Growing up in Southern California, I loved watching Sheriff John’s Lunch Brigade in glorious black & white. The show began airing on L.A. station KTTV in 1952 and featured popular segments including the daily Pledge of Allegiance and Safety Bulletin. Weekdays after kindergarten, I would sit on the floor of our family room in front of our wooden ark-like Zenith console TV and wait for Mom to bring in my wholesome all-American lunch which — if I was lucky — included a deviled egg sandwich on white Wonder bread with the crusts cut off, and a wiggly, jiggly square of orange Jell-O with shredded carrot and pineapple chunks inside.
