From the moment Santa Claus stepped out onto Park Avenue in Adams Square on Saturday, he had command of dozens of children and their parents. They flanked him for quick snaps of their digital cameras before he settled down on his padded wicker bench, where one by one, youngsters took their turn posing for that seminal childhood picture. Some were eager; others were less so. After 4-year-old David Tsarukyan and his cousin, Nicole, 3, were planted on the bench, the clock ticked on voicing their Christmas wishes.

Two men and a woman driving a silver Corvette led sheriff?s deputies on a vehicle pursuit through the streets of La Cañada Flintridge early Tuesday evening, ending with the suspects escaping by racing up a Foothill (210) Freeway exit against traffic. The chase followed a more than two-hour search for the two males, who were suspected of burglarizing homes on Mountain Meadows Lane and White Deer Drive. According to Sgt. Gary Ogurek, witnesses contacted the Crescenta Valley Sheriff?

More than 40 youngsters filled bowls with ice cream topped with sprinkles, chocolate sauce and whipped cream. But this was no ice cream shop. This was Verdugo Woodlands Elementary School’s kindergarten orientation on Wednesday. The Parent Teachers Assn. and the Woodlanders Volunteer organization (WAVE) pulled out 12 gallons of ice cream from the freezer and even the most timid students opened up. “Ice cream seems to be the common denominator to break the ice,” said Launa Penza, PTA president at Verdugo Woodlands Elementary.

With a rallying cry of “Go bananas!” Pastor Charles Updike freed about 60 students in a summer acting camp to begin eating a 30-foot banana split they’d built on Friday outside the First Baptist Church of Glendale. The students dug spoons into the inside of a plastic gutter that had been lined with tin foil and then filled with sundae ingredients. “If anyone with kids drives past, I think they better have childproof windows,” said 9-year-old Hanah Dains, as she stood eating at one end of the giant sundae.

Whether they spent the day shopping or having a picnic on the grass, visitors at the Americana at Brand paid tribute to moms on Mother’s Day, as they packed the outdoor mall on Sunday. Hundreds came for brunch, while others strolled around the Americana for the first time. West Los Angeles resident Alison Decadenet and her 10-year-old son, Aidan, came to see “Son of Rambo.” Earlier in the day, Aidan treated his mother to breakfast. “We are spending the day together,” Decadenet said.

Foothill children and adults carried pan after pan of spaghetti from the kitchen of the First Baptist Church in Glendale to waiting vehicles last Saturday night. They had prepared meals for those in need at a Burbank shelter that was sponsored by EIMAGO, a Union Rescue Mission affiliation. The group was organized through St. George’s Episcopal Church in La Cañada, with guidance from the Food for Body and Soul organization. David Earle and Kitty Galt, co-founders of the organization, are members of St. George.
