DOWNTOWN — DineEquity Inc., the Glendale-based owner of IHOP Restaurants and Applebee’s Neighborhood Grill & Bar, on Wednesday reported earnings of $31-million for 2009, bouncing back from a $154-million loss the year prior. The family-dining giant has more than 3,400 franchise or company-owned restaurants and employs 225 people at its headquarters and 1,000 nationwide. The majority of IHOP and Applebee’s employees work for franchisees, according to DineEquity.

Trucks to work on removing city graffiti The city of Glendale last month introduced two new graffiti response vehicles. The trucks, a major component of the city?s graffiti-removal efforts, are equipped with a heated pressure washer, an airless paint sprayer, 120-volt electricity, 150 gallons of water, eco-friendly removal chemicals, cover-up paint and other tools. Event Solutions Magazine has nominated Laura Thompson, president of Glendale-based Your Great Event, for a 2010 Spotlight Award as event producer of the year. The award will be presented in March. This is the second major award nomination for Thompson in as many months. Your Great Event is also nominated for a Gala Award from the Special Event magazine. The Event Solutions Spotlight Awards are unique to the event world. The awards recognize and honor the top individuals and companies that lead in the special-events industry.

Glendale-based International House of Pancakes, or IHOP, this week announced the roll out of new menu items, which include a lineup of dinner options. The items are available nationwide and are a result of extensive research. They include new options for seniors and kids, as well as additional “For Me” selections, which offers guests dishes that are lower in fat, calories or carbohydrates.   Masstech teams up with local company Masstech announced this week that, in conjunction with National TeleConsultants of Glendale, it has completed the commissioning of a large-scale file-based work flow solution for Fox Network Center-Houston, in The Woodlands, Texas.

Remodeled store receives award Palladeo Construction, a Glendale-based environmental design and retail strategy, custom decor and fixture fabrication and full-service construction firm, partnered with Albertsons on a La Habra store remodel in 2008. The remodeled store recently received the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Silver certification from the U.S. Green Building Council. It is the first major retail grocery store to earn the distinction for an interior remodel.

NORTH GLENDALE — The local business community Wednesday was told to embrace “a sense of urgency” as it faces a turbulent recession that promises to test the leadership chops of even the most seasoned executives. At the Glendale Chamber of Commerce business outlook breakfast Wednesday, Desmond Hague, president of Glendale-based IHOP Restaurants, told a crowd of local business leaders that as the recession takes hold, they’d be well-advised to “hug” their customers, maintain a company vision and embrace innovation.
