In November 2008, a Glendale resident logged onto the Internet forum Topix looking for answers about hostility between Armenian and non-Armenian residents of the city. What, if anything, was the explanation behind the animosity and generalizations that this person had observed? Nearly 3,000 posts, 400 pages and four years later, the thread is still active. In fact, the latest posting was this weekend. Over time, this forum, as is typical of a large amount of discussions on Topix, has turned into a two-way racist cesspool with little intelligent conversation, bruised egos and posts so ridiculous you can't help but laugh.

I wasn?t looking for trouble. I was minding my own business, standing in my kitchen washing dishes and couldn?t help but hear the TV in the next room. There was a program on about ?Love,? the Beatles-themed Cirque du Soleil show, and one of the creators was talking about how expensive it is to put on the production. The cost ?incentivized me? to make it profitable, he said. In the mumble-mumble years I?ve been writing about grammar, I?ve learned that peevishness is futile. When you start picking on others?

Rep. David Dreier praised the passage of legislation last week in the House of Representatives that would monitor terrorist communications. The Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act passed 232-191 on Sept. 28. Dreier, a Republican whose districts includes La Crescenta, voted to modernize the legislation, which would allow intelligence agencies to track and catch terrorists, he said. In the 26 years since the legislation was first enacted, the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act has not been updated to take into account the use of advances in technology, Dreier said.
