?Very well-mannered? is the first description offered by Crescenta Valley High football Coach Tony Zarrillo in regard to Jake Walker. It?s immediately followed by ?wonderfully polite.? ?One of the nicest kids you?re ever gonna meet,? says Zarrillo of the 6-foot-3, 185-pound senior. While they are no doubt sentiments that would make Walker?s parents proud, they?re hardly the imposing images that normally characterize a linebacker. That revelation immediately brings a grin to Zarrillo?

GLENDALE ? In the chase for the Pacific League title, the Crescenta Valley High football team kept pace the entire season, finishing second after losing only once, to the league champion, Muir. In the hunt to make the playoffs, Glendale High was right there every step of the way, as well, finishing in a three-way tie for fourth place and narrowly missing the postseason by virtue of the fateful flip of a coin. Both teams had key players recognized with selections to the All-Pacific League team, which honors the best in the league at their respective positions as voted by the league?

BOYS? GOLF Crescenta Valley 194, La Salle 207: Kory Barkley garnered low-medalist honors for the Falcons with an even-par 36 at Brookside Golf Course No. 1 on Thursday. Crescenta Valley improved to 20-1 on the season behind a 38 from Justin Yu and a 39 from Michael Timpson. ? BOYS? TRACK AND FIELD Crescenta Valley 76, Pasadena 51: Junior Jake Walker won the pole vault with a mark of 10 feet before capturing the triple jump (39 feet 3/4 inches)

The Crescenta Valley Football team culminated their 9-3 season with an awards banquet Dec. 11 at Brookside Country Club. A highlight was the presentation of five memorial awards presented in remembrance and honor of fallen Falcon players. Ryan Eberhart was presented with the John Barbaro Award. Barbaro died in 2001 and was noted as a very gifted young athlete who excelled in both football and baseball. He had a reputation as an intense competitor and a natural leader. Brendan Murphy was presented with the Leon Panduro Award.

Crescenta Valley High School held its annual Falcon Award assembly on Friday, May 29. The Falcon Award is presented to the one student who exemplified outstanding characteristics throughout their years in high school. The award, which was first created in 1999, acknowledges and honors these students. This year there were five semi-finalists and six finalists. Every semi-finalist was awarded with $75 and every finalist received $250. This year?s recipient is Jennifer Lee. Competing with Lee for the prize were finalists Ricky Arvizu, Amanda Schwartz, Jessica Park, Jake Walker and Jerry Yoon.

A great meet for Crescenta Valley last Thursday as the Falcons beat Muir in a rout on both the boys’ and girls’ sides. The boys’ team won, 69-58, on the strength of Zack Torres’ runs in the 1,600 meters (4 minutes, 30.4 seconds) and 800 meters (1:58.2). Torres also ran in the Meet of Champions in Walnut on Saturday, placing second (9:05.1) in the boys’ 3,200 meters behind El Toro’s Villalva, who broke the nine-minute barrier (8:59.5). Torres also helped fellow distance runner freshman Mike Duncan in the 1,600, helping Duncan pace for a 4:30.

Crescenta Valley track showed up strong at the Camarillo Invitational this past weekend, with a number of the school’s best runners making a good impression. When asked if his racers are reaching their peak of the season, Crescenta Valley Head Coach Mark Evans said no. “This is still early in the season with the important races still to come,” said Evans. “These races are to asses fitness levels and see where they are. We still have big goals to reach.
