Eugene Erwin Sader Born May 24, 1935 in Glendale, California passed away April 13, 2013. He grew up in Burbank, California the son of Conrad and Marie Sader, German immigrants who came from Russia, through Nebraska, and settled in Burbank. He had an older brother, Clyde Conrad Sader, who preceded him in death, and who he greatly admired. They loved to toss the baseball around, and they will now be reunited. He grew up around his uncles' ranch. The Hudkins Brothers Stables worked with the movie studios, and owned the horse Trigger, which was sold to Roy Rogers.

The Glendale Area Alumnae Panhellenic will have its 65th annual Scholarship Luncheon on March 16 at the Oakmont Country Club. Each year, the group awards scholarship grants to college-bound high school senior women from more than 10 private and public high schools in the area, as well as to college sorority women who meet different eligibility requirements. In 2012, volunteers raised and granted more than $5,000 in scholarship awards. The 2012 high school scholarship recipients were Burbank residents Alyssa Ehredt and Elizabeth Pascual, both from John Burroughs High School; Valery Vasquez, Burbank High School; Allison Lipscomb, Glendale, Notre Dame High School; and La Crescenta residents Marisa Gonzales, Crescenta Valley High School; and Jessica Palacios, Clark Magnet High School.

GLENDALE — Students at three Glendale Unified School District schools have been stricken with swine flu, but administrators said the virus has not reached levels forecasted by state health officials. Seven cases have been reported at Rosemont Middle School, two at Crescenta Valley High and one at Monte Vista Elementary, Deputy. Supt. Richard Sheehan said. “It’s definitely in our community, which is no surprise,” he said. “We’re asking people to be vigilant about taking care of their kids, making sure they are well rested, eating well, washing their hands for 20 seconds and covering their mouth when they cough or sneeze.

Burbank Philharmonic Orchestra officials are hoping to create a harmonious blend of the visual and performing arts at the free classical music concert on Saturday. Local high school students will display photographic illustrations they’ve created, and all ages can try out musical instruments before the concert in the Hall of Liberty at Forest Lawn Hollywood Hills. John Burroughs High School’s advanced photography class has created the illustrations of composer Nicolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s “Scheherazade,” said Lynda Willner, of Glendale, who is president of the philharmonic’s board of directors.

HASTINGS — CIULLA Michael and Kathy Hastings, of Burbank, have announced the engagement of their daughter, Lauren Elizabeth Hastings, to Peter Matthew Ciulla, the son of Louis and Maureen Ciulla, of La Crescenta. The bride-to-be is a graduate of John Burroughs High School and Cal State Northridge. She works in special education with the Burbank Unified School District. The groom-to-be is a graduate of Loyola High School, did his undergraduate work at UC Riverside and received his master's degree in mechanical engineering from UC San Diego.

BURBANK — State Supt. of Public Instruction Jack O'Connell along with the California Highway Patrol and a representative of Mothers Against Drunk Driving on Wednesday encouraged students to celebrate the new year without drinking and driving under the influence. During a news conference O'Connell spoke to reporters on the front steps of John Burroughs High School. "New Year's is a dangerous time on our roadways, in particular for our young drivers," O'Connell said. "If you choose to drink and drive, you will pay. You will pay greatly."

BURBANK — The leaders of tomorrow got a chance to meet with the leaders of today Wednesday at the 22nd annual Youth Leadership Conference, held at the Hilton Burbank Airport and Convention Center. "This is an opportunity to engage our future leaders, being our students, with those currently in leadership roles," said event chairman Sunder Ramani, a board member for Glendale Character and Ethics Project, the nonprofit, volunteer organization that sponsored the event. This year's conference focused on ethics in sports.

BURBANK — With athletes getting sidelined for drug use and parents facing criminal charges for attacking coaches, organizers of the 22nd annual Youth Leadership Conference are tackling ethics in sport this year. Students from local schools, community and business leaders will participate in the conference today at the Hilton Burbank Airport & Convention Center. State Secretary of Education Alan Bersin will be the keynote speaker at this year's conference, which the Glendale Character and Ethics Project is sponsoring.
