MONTROSE — Glendale Fire Department Paramedics began their trip to Verdugo Hills Hospital on Monday morning with one patient but arrived with two. Along the way, Lia Morgan Cappiello was born. Chantel Cappiello, pregnant with her second child and a week past due, began to have what she thought were light cramps. She told her husband they should head for the hospital. “We were in our van about to get on the freeway at La Crescenta Avenue,” Cappiello said. In their van and headed to Kaiser Permanente Hospital in Los Angeles, her pain became more like labor.

APOLLONIA PATRIC Apollonia Patric, 93, a former longtime Glendale resident, died Jan. 1, 2003, in El Monte. Mrs. Patric was born Oct. 10, 1909, in Minnesota. Prior to retiring, she worked for Drapers Clothing Store and Fashion Center in Glendale. She was a member of Incarnation Church. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, James and Laurel Patric of Glendale. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Apollonia Patric's name to the American Cancer Society, 4940 Van Nuys Blvd.

Janine Marnien First there were 1,000, then 250, then 38 girls vying for a spot on the 2003 Tournament of Roses Royal Court. Then there were seven, as the girls selected as this year's princesses were announced Monday at the Tournament House in Pasadena. Those seven include three girls who attend La Canada Flintridge schools. Katherine Berber, Glynn-Helene Joseph and Danielle Yamamoto, all 17, were greeted with some of the loudest screams and applause of the morning from friends and family who came to cheer them on. "I'm still in shock," said Glynn-Helene, a senior at Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy.

Robert Chacon Gordon C. Milbauer, a Montrose Shopping Park fixture during holiday seasons, died Thursday of natural causes at a Kaiser Permanente hospital in Panorama City, daughter Bobbie Enoch said. He was 81. Every Christmas season for the past 40 years, Milbauer donned a Santa Claus suit for the Glendale station of the Salvation Army, stood with his red kettle along the 2300 block of Honolulu Avenue and solicited donations with the ring of his bell.

Karen S. Kim Drivers traveling through Glendale received little reprieve from flashing brake lights and gridlock Wednesday morning, as traffic accident after traffic accident jammed the Ventura (134) Freeway. The California Highway Patrol's Altadena division responded to at least four accidents between 7 a.m. and 2 p.m. in the Glendale area. The first call to the CHP came at 7:30 a.m. when a Toyota Corolla slammed into a Chevrolet pickup truck in the carpool lane near the Cahuenga Boulevard exit of the freeway.

The matron of honor was Lori Matzner. Bridesmaids were Stacy Hollinger, Nancy Shaheen, Becky Thomas and Shannon Matzner. Courtney Wilson was the flower girl. Mike Matzner was the best man. Ushers were Darin Wolf, Mike Kemp, Jeff Nelson and Jim Hamilton. Ringbearer was Christopher Matzner.
