PASADENA — Spending five days in Maui over Christmas break didn’t do too much to mellow the Crescenta Valley High boys’ basketball team. In fact, participation in the Maui Winter Classic, in which the Falcons advanced to the championship game on Tuesday, seemed to only intensify the brisk pace at which they have begun the season. Led by 17 points and 13 rebounds from Coltrane Powdrill and 12 points, five rebounds and five assists from Nick Dragovich, Crescenta Valley pounced on Gabrielino early in the first quarter and kept the Eagles at bay throughout the game to claim a 61-42 win in the opening round of the 2009 La Salle/Temple City Holiday Classic at La Salle.

PASADENA — No matter how hard they tried to end their shooting woes, the shots just didn’t fall for the Flintridge Prep girls’ basketball team. Specifically, the Rebels attempted eight shots and misfired on all of them in the third quarter. Despite a valiant fourth-quarter comeback bid, the third quarter proved to be Flintridge Prep’s undoing. Flintridge Prep managed just four free throws in the third quarter and suffered a 55-46 loss to La Salle on Thursday afternoon in a pool-play contest of the Pasadena Poly Tournament.

PASADENA — Wearing a plastic face protector, Megan Musashi was hardly bothered by the addition to her playing gear, much less anything the opposition threw at her. The standout senior guard on the Flintridge Prep girls’ basketball team had to wear the mask to protect her after she got hit in the nose, but it hardly slowed her down. Musashi turned in quite a performance Tuesday night, as she came through with a game-high 22 points, four assists and three steals to spark Flintridge Prep to a 48-41 victory against Maranatha in a pool-play contest of the Pasadena Poly Tournament.

LA CAÑADA FLINTRIDGE — Something didn’t seem right while Flintridge Prep boys’ water polo Coach Keean Ferguson watched his team perform Monday afternoon. Unfortunately for Ferguson, it’s an act he’s seen unfold more than once throughout the first part of the season — lackluster efforts from some of his athletes. Flintridge Prep appeared out of sync throughout a 12-6 Prep League loss to visiting La Salle. “For the most part, we did what we wanted to defensively,” said Ferguson, whose team fell to 6-5 and 0-2 in league.

BURBANK — None of the projected starting lineup expected to suit up this upcoming season for the Crescenta Valley High girls’ basketball squad could be found on the court Wednesday afternoon. Two athletes were out with knee injuries. One was in Phoenix attending a basketball function, another was attending a class and the other had a tennis practice. That forced Crescenta Valley Coach Jason Perez to do some major shuffling during Crescenta Valley’s meeting with La Salle in a Burbank High Summer League game.
