SODERQUIST -- PAGELER Lisa Soderquist and Robert Pageler have announced their engagement. The bride-to-be is the daughter of Wayne and Colleen Soderquist of Seattle. She graduated from the University of Washington with a bachelor's degree in forestry. She is employed as a human resources assistant at St. Rose Dominican Hospital in Las Vegas. The groom-elect is the son of Ranney and Cindy Pageler of La Crescenta. He graduated from Crescenta Valley High School and the University of Arizona with a bachelor's degree in business.

GLENDALE ? Make that a perfect 10 for Vanes Martirosyan. The Glendale resident, a junior middleweight boxer, pounded Marcus Brooks on Saturday to remain undefeated in his professional career. Martirosyan, 20, won 60-53 on a pair of scorecards and 60-52 on another to walk away with a unanimous six-round victory at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas, the site of his first fight on television. Martirosyan (10-0, 6 KOs), a former U.S. Olympian, fought on the high-profile HBO pay-per-view card that featured the upset loss of World Boxing Council heavyweight champion Hasim Rahman to Russian Oleg Maskaev.

Civil Service Commissioners on Wednesday voted to reinstate one of three Glendale police officers who were fired for allegedly taking a patrol car on a joyride to Las Vegas. Commissioners voted 4 to 1 to reinstate Patrick Hamblin as a Glendale police officer, city spokesman Tom Lorenz said. He must still absorb a 90-day work suspension without pay, Lorenz added. “We support the findings of the Civil Service Commission,” Lorenz said. “It's their job to make these determinations…It's obvious in their findings; they do uphold very strong standards for employees in the city of Glendale.” Hamblin, who stopped working on April 1, will also be reduced from a Step 6 police classification to Step 3 officer, Lorenz said.

Tania Chatila The mother and sister of 20-year-old former Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy soccer player Jessica Hanson, who died in a car crash with her father Kelly Hanson Aug. 5, have been released from University Medical Center in Las Vegas after being hospitalized for injuries sustained during the same collision as the family headed for Lake Havasu. Belinda Hanson, 49, and Jacqueline Hanson, 23, were hospitalized for over a week before being released on Saturday, according to hospital personnel.

GLENDALE — Summer came to a close for Sarah Salvo. Salvo, a Glendale resident, saw her grueling summer schedule on the American Junior Golf Assn. tour come to an end Friday afternoon after she finished tied for 10th at the PING Phoenix Junior Tournament at Moon Valley Country Club in Phoenix. Salvo, a senior at Sherman Oaks Notre Dame High, carded a five-over-par 77. She entered the final round tied for third, but couldn’t put a complete round together. “My approach shots to the green were not real good,” said Salvo, who recorded an eagle on the sixth hole and captured two junior tournaments this summer.

James E. "Jim" Barnes passed away May 11, at the age of 49 in La Cañada, his home for the past six years. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. He was a much loved father, husband and friend. Born in Riverside, Jim grew up in the Northridge area, spending his time with sports and the West Valley YMCA, where he met his future wife, Bonnie, and so many of his longtime friends. Jim graduate from UCLA with a bachelor's degree in economics and political science and obtained a juris doctor degree from Pepperdine University, where he served on the Pepperdine Law Review.

Charles Rich For some, it's the quality of life to visit a casino or attend a concert in the backdrop of the bright lights of Las Vegas. For Stephanie Rigamat, there's more to life than winning in blackjack or listening to Wayne Newton sing his classic tunes. Nor will she keep a low profile. Rigamat will be heading south of the Las Vegas strip to become the assistant coach of the UNLV women's soccer program. Rigamat, who starred at Crescenta Valley High from 1993-97, was hired July 8 and will begin tackling her responsibilities July 26. She will take over for take over for Todd Abdalla, who resigned his position but will still work with the squad as a volunteer assistant.

Karen S. Kim GLENDALE -- David Crawford has wanted to be a judge since he was just a kid. And now at 46, with 16 years of legal experience under his belt, Crawford is running for the open judicial seat of retiring Los Angeles Superior Court Judge David Finkel. "It's something I've been shooting for since I was very young," Crawford said. "It's why I went to law school." Crawford, a Pasadena attorney specializing in insurance defense litigation, has been working toward his goal since he was attending high school in Las Vegas where he grew up. He attended the University of Nevada, Las Vegas -- becoming the first in his family, which includes five brothers and sisters, to go to college.

The Vanguard University men's basketball team has signed five transfers and three freshmen to join a program that finished 10-19 last season, 5-15 in the Golden State Athletic Conference, and missed the conference tournament for the second straight season. Greg Gusiff is one player the Lions are already familiar with. Gusiff was a member of GSAC-rival Hope International last season, and scored 13 points in the game against Vanguard Feb. 26. The 6-foot-1 guard was the fifth-leading scorer for the Royals, averaging seven points per outing.
