Forest Lawn figures prominently in the Krukow family of Glendale. When Louis G. Krukow died in 1910, he was buried at Forest Lawn, and the family frequently visited his grave site, sometimes picnicking while they were there, according to family stories told by Wilma Krukow Crawford to her daughter, Betty Crawford McMurray. In 1910, Forest Lawn was just 4 years old. It was a small, unremarkable cemetery in Tropico with a few eucalyptus trees. Most of the land was covered with brush, and there were some granite monuments.

SOUTHEAST GLENDALE — Police shot and wounded a man after a three-hour standoff Friday at Forest Lawn Glendale, where he fled after fatally shooting a woman in Los Angeles, police said. Glendale officers responded to reports of gunshots and a suspicious vehicle on cemetery grounds on South Glendale Avenue at 9:45 p.m. Thursday, Officer John Balian said. Officers saw a black Cadillac Escalade parked on the grass near the top of the memorial park, he said. When officers approached the man in the vehicle — who was subsequently identified as Rene Munoz, 38, of Los Angeles — he began firing a shotgun in their direction, but no one was hit, he said.

A few weeks ago, upon returning to my home on Pacific Avenue and Cumberland Road in Glendale, I encountered a group of people with large drills drilling holes on the lawn that I maintain on the Cumberland side of my house. I asked them what they were doing, and they said that they were in the process of installing antennas for T-Mobile. I asked them to tell me who authorized them to do such a thing, and they pointed to a man who identified himself as a coordinator for the city of Glendale.

GLENDALE ? Police said gang violence is likely the cause of the first reported homicide of the year in Los Angeles County, a shooting death at Forest Lawn cemetery on the Los Angeles-Glendale border. Los Angeles resident Jason Grey, 29, suffered multiple gunshot wounds to his upper body at about noon Tuesday while he was at the cemetery on South Glendale Avenue, Los Angeles Police Officer Ana Aguirre said. ?It is being described as a gang-related motive, but that?s pretty much all we have,?

Gentle rays of light illuminate the colorful stained-glass windows at the Forest Lawn Museum that depict the birth and the early childhood of Jesus Christ. Five stained-glass windows are on display at the museum, each of which illustrate the life of Christ with Mary and Joseph. The exhibit, “Light & Hope: The Forest Lawn Christmas Windows,” is part of the museum’s permanent stained-glass collection which is displayed every year during the holiday season. On Sunday, visitors to the museum stopped to take a look at the windows, which are showcased in Gallery 3. Glendale residents Renee and Herman Stark came to see the exhibits at the museum.

Rosemont Middle School parents got to spend a little quality time with their children last Friday. The school held their annual Lunch on the Lawn event, hosting an army of parents carrying lunches from local restaurants to enjoy with their kids on the school?s campus. Some brought lawn chairs, others blankets as they transformed the school?s field into a family picnic area. ?This is a neat idea,? said Mike Proctor as he enjoyed lunch with his son, Adam, and his friend, Mitchell Skinner.

It was the deaths of her husband and son that led Shirley Darling to the before-need cemetery planning business 45 years ago. Darling’s husband died after a long-term illness in 1962, and her son died in a car accident six months later, she said. After the passing of her loved ones, the Glendale resident decided to work with people who had experienced death. Darling got an accounting job at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Glendale, and then she switched to selling burial plots, crypts and mausoleums.
