Hamlet Nalbandyan GLENDALE -- So you think this year's Glendale Senior Softball All-Star team, which is one win away from capturing the Little League World Series, is pretty good, huh? With their sparkling 12-1 record, never-say-die attitude, and a roster filled with some of the area's big-name high school players, so that impresses you? Well, it should. SOFTBALL Crescenta Valley 1, Sultana 0: The Falcons improved to 9-0 this season with the Highland Tournament victory Friday at Highland High and dropped Sultana to 2-5-1. CV was led by pitcher Meredith Cervenka, who allowed two hits and struck out 14. It stretched her streak to 234 innings without giving up an earned run -- 34 shy of the state record held by former La Canada High hurler Lindsay Parker. Jessica Crownover's hard-hit ball to the Sultana shortstop resulted in the only run, when the shortstop misplayed it, allowing Ally Webber -- who walked -- to score in the third inning.

Meredith Cervenka is the best softball pitcher in the area. When she enters the pitching circle, the opposing team has little to look forward to. In her past two games for Crescenta Valley High School, Cervenka has been perfect. No player has reached base. She hasn't given up an earned run in 267 innings. The state record is 268. However, the record will be a tainted one. In the 245th inning of this already incredible streak, a batted ball was ruled a hit by the Arcadia scorekeeper.
