Edgar Melik-Stepanyan SOUTHEAST GLENDALE -- Who would have envisioned it? The Glendale Community College football team's defense -- the same unit that allowed 88 points and 761 yards of total offense in its first two games -- played its best game yet and continued its resurgence thanks to a little maneuvering and twitching of the scheme by defensive coordinator Don Scott Jr. Scott's defense forced four crucial second-half...

Edgar Melik-Stepanyan SAN BERNARDINO -- Better, but still not good enough for a win. The Glendale Community College football team rebounded from a miserable season-opening performance with a strong first-half display against host San Bernardino Valley College. For the first 30 minutes Vaquero Coach John Cicuto was pleased with his team's all-around effort, but the Wolverines' running attack and special teams in the third quarter proved to be too overpowering in a nonconference game Saturday night.

GLENDALE — Juggling the coaching responsibilities of two soccer teams proved to take up plenty of Charles Martinez’s time. Trying to coach three teams resulted in him making a difficult decision. Martinez, who guided the Hoover High boys’ soccer team to the program’s first Pacific League championship in 2007, resigned his post with the Tornadoes last week so he could concentrate on coaching a pair of Los Angeles Futbol Club teams in La Cañada Flintridge.

On Dec. 15, I went to the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion to see "La Boheme" with my sophomore English class. I think that the Italian Giacomo Puccini did an impressive job at composing it in 1896. What I liked most about "La Boheme" was just viewing it. For example, in the first act it really did look like we were in an attic studio. Everything there just looked so real. I liked that feeling it gave me. Christopher Harlen did a splendid job at directing it. Before going to see it that day, I didn't know what to expect.

As Doug Martinez strolled up to the green on hole No. 2 of Costa Mesa Golf & Country Club's Los Lagos course, a round of applause broke out from the gallery. Martinez, from San Clemente, had nailed a near-perfect shot, reaching the green on his second swing from 250 yards out on the 531-yard, par-5 hole. That shot turned out to be the difference, as Martinez birdied the hole to edge Newport Coast resident Amit Chopra in a sudden-death playoff Sunday in the final round of the championship flight (players with handicaps of 2.2 and less)

Recently, the Glendale Humane Society has been closely scrutinized by our politicians and the News-Press for internal mismanagement and alleged mistreatment of animals. All that has been proved is that one employee could not reconcile his adoption counselor duties with his euthanasia responsibilities, took too many animals home and defrauded the shelter of $3,000 to feed them. Various parties jumped at the chance of tearing apart anything that the Humane Society does, to the point that individuals find it quite entertaining to further add wood to the fire and write to the papers complaining about mundane things such as not being greeted according to their desires, or not getting a discount that should have applied.
