A La Crescenta youth is scheduled to tour nationwide this fall in the Walt Disney Co. production of “Mary Poppins.” Carter Thomas, 9, who will be a fourth-grader at Verdugo Academy, a home school through Glendale Unified School District, was selected this past week by Disney to portray Michael Banks, one of the two lead roles for children in the national theatrical version of the classic production. Despite his age, Carter is a veteran stage and television performer.

A local youth is scheduled to tour nationwide this fall in the Disney production of “Mary Poppins.” Carter Thomas, 9, who will be a fourth-grade student at Verdugo Academy, a home school through Glendale Unified School District, was selected this past week by Disney to portray Michael Banks, one of the two lead roles for children in the national theatrical version of the classic production. Carter is the son of Robert and Lynne Thomas of La Crescenta, and the brother of Tracey, 16, and Rebecca, 14, students at Crescenta Valley High School, and Philip, 11, a sixth grader at Monte Vista Elementary School.

Hollywood's legendary El Capitan Theatre will sing in the New Year with a special return engagement of the Sing-a-Long version of Walt Disney's classic "Mary Poppins," from Jan. 11 through 31. The film will be projected digitally using fully restored film elements and a re-mastered soundtrack featuring state-of-the-art audio technology. Audiences are encouraged to dress as their favorite characters from the film, and to lend their voices to the classic soundtrack (as the words to the songs are projected up on the screen)

Anyone who loves pancakes and a good deal should head to Rosemont Middle School this Saturday morning for the Fifth Annual Rosemont Middle School Rummage Sale and Pancake Breakfast. The morning event is to help off set the costs of the students' trip to New York sponsored by the history department. The seven days and seven nights excursion will lead students through history following the Erie canal to Hudson and onto West Point where they will have lunch in the cadets cafeteria.

Richard M. Sherman, half of the team that wrote the score and screenplay for the film "Tom Sawyer," will attend the 2 p.m. screening Saturday at The Alex Theatre. Sherman will discuss the making of the film. The film is based on the classic Mark Twain novel, "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer." The score for this musical adaptation was co-written by Richard M. and Robert B. Sherman ("Mary Poppins" and "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang"), who also wrote the screenplay.

The Walt Disney Co.has reached an agreement that would bring Pixar Animation Studios' "Cars 2," Disney's"The Muppets" and other approved films to Chinese cable television viewers, broadening the Burbank entertainment giant's access in the world's most populous market. An executive from You On Demand said Wednesday that it had struck a licensing deal with Disney to rent current films, as well as classic movies such as "The Lion King"or "Mary Poppins," through its recently launched on-demand service in China.

My dad has great pockets. He can tune your car or butcher a side of beef with the tools he carries on him. At any given moment he can come up with the exact piece of hardware necessary. It's like watching Mary Poppins pull that lamp out of her carpet bag. Always makes me feel safe. A couple of years ago, (or so) when I was in my teens, he was having a bad time resolving a situation. We sat down to talk and he said, "It's like this." He reached into his pocket and pulled out a heavy duty metal tape measure.

Burbank native Leslie Iwerks took on the daunting task of compacting 35 years of history on George Lucas' visual effects company, Industrial Light & Magic, into her documentary on the company's evolution that will be seen this weekend on Encore. In the hour-long piece, "Industrial Light & Magic: Creating the Impossible," several of the visionaries who created some of the most mind-blowing scenes in film are interviewed, including Lucas. Narrated by Tom Cruise, the documentary features clips from "The Abyss," "Jurassic Park," "Twister" and "Transformers," and behind-the-scenes footage illustrating how techniques were invented and perfected over the years.
