“Boob-a-Palooza” was an early kick-off to the October fundraisers for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Walk for a Cure. The Palooza, or “Money for Mammaries,” on Saturday, Sept. 17, was held all day at the La Crescenta Woman's Club. Generous vendors donated every penny from the sale of their merchandise, or a large percentage thereof. Among the most generous were those offering spa services. Reflexologist Shawna Livingston Coatney massaged her customers' feet for free. A tip donated to the fundraiser was suggested.

"Last year, I did 128 massages," Glendale shop owner Helen McDonagh said. "I'm hoping to beat it this year. Opening a new business during the nation’s economic downturn can be risky, but Spa Pura owners Ben Chun and Michelle Ju think their massage and skin care business will weather the storm. The pair understand that people are cutting back on spending, but Ju said people should treat themselves during these tough economic times. “I like to give people a good place where they can relax and they can relieve their stress with not too much expense,” Ju said. Chun and Ju knew they would have to make their prices affordable to make it through the recession, Spa Pura marketing director Kristen Spaun said.

CITY HALL ? Planning commissioners Wednesday upheld an earlier city decision to prevent a chiropractic business from expanding its massage services, citing the location?s ?troubling? history of prostitution-related citations and arrests. The operators of K&P Health Care Corporation at 1610 Colorado St. wanted to modify their conditional-use permit to allow walk-in massage clients without a referral from a medical professional, such as a chiropractor or acupuncturist. But the Planning Commission on Wednesday reaffirmed an earlier city decision to deny the request amid fears that easing the restrictions could pave the way for a full-on massage parlor, which would require a different permit.
