I concur with Heather Dinger's letter (“Drayman and the real 'Mr. Montrose,'” May 30) with regard to John Drayman being referred to as “Mr. Montrose.” Having known Frank Roberts for many years, he was, and always will be, the only “Mr. Montrose.” Leann Warner Glendale

I am, as many of us are, following the John Drayman story. It will be interesting to see what the final outcome is. But I cannot fathom why we are referring to Drayman as “Mr. Montrose.” There has been one, and only one, man who has ever been endeared to our hearts as “Mr. Montrose,” and that was the late Frank Roberts. I am saddened to have Frank “Mr. Montrose” Roberts' name and spirit diminished by having that title used loosely for anyone else. Heather Dinger Glendale

The first time Alyce Russell thought she'd been duped by her longtime friend John Drayman was at the former councilman's reelection-night party last April. At the time, Russell was president of the Montrose Shopping Park Assn., which runs the Montrose Harvest Market. Drayman was in charge of counting proceeds from the market, but by election day, he was nearly 11 months behind on turning the money in, according to recently unsealed grand jury testimony. Russell and other shopping park officials knew Drayman was busy with campaigning, so they let the tardiness slide.

Grand jury testimony in the embezzlement case against John Drayman - unsealed Friday - painted a picture of lax oversight of the former city councilman's collection and accounting of proceeds from the Montrose Harvest Market, an operation that consistently lost money until more stringent controls were implemented. The ousted manager of the Montrose Harvest Market has started his own weekend event with the help of former City Councilman John Drayman. Despite an ongoing investigation into allegations that Drayman embezzled money from the Montrose Shopping Park Assn., which manages the Harvest Market on Honolulu Avenue, several vendors who plan to join a new craft market Saturday say they aren't worried about the investigation. “I have no idea what he did wrong. I have no say in that, but all I know is the way he treated me,” said collectibles vendor Bob Waldron.

The association in charge of the Montrose Shopping Park is looking to add another employee to its ranks, making it the city's only business improvement group with such a robust workforce.
