Frank Murphy, Enjoy! BURBANK -- The one word that comes to mind after dinner at Poquito Mas is flavor. I was able to appreciate the taste of the chicken, steak, tuna and shrimp without being overpowered by cheese or cilantro, as is common at so many other Mexican restaurants. But Poquito Mas does use plenty of fresh onions, so bring along some Altoids, especially if you order the shrimp burrito. I went with five friends on a busy Saturday evening.

There is a lot of discussion in our nation these days about the growing epidemic of obesity and its causes. Although the root cause of people being overweight is that we eat too much and don't get enough exercise, I'm starting to think the grocery store deserves part of the blame. Rima Shah Think outside the sushi box. That's what Tony Chang, the owner of a new Japanese restaurant, Takeshi Ramen, on Brand Boulevard, wants to tell the city. His restaurant, which offers Ramen or noodle bowls, provides a different kind of Japanese cuisine that goes beyond California rolls. The restaurant offers a variety of noodle bowls with different flavoring and soup bases. "In Japan, most people don't eat sushi or sashimi everyday," Chang said.

Sometimes you have to eat quick. But the "usual suspects" of the fast-food world can leave lots to be desired, with their drive-through trans-fat, calorie-packed offerings. Teriyaki Me! in Glendale, with its made-to-order fare, offers an alternative to the burger trap. Billed as a gourmet Asian grill, the menu offers skewers, stir-fries and yakisoba, with no steam tables or heat lamps in sight. Most of the kitchen is in view in this tiny place. As you place your order, you can see the saute guy hit the pan with a thin stream of oil to start cooking your meal.

Hard to believe that before Wacky Wok came along, there was no Chinese restaurant in current-day Montrose. Yes, New Moon and Sun Palace are down the street, but the walkable heart and soul of Montrose needed a modern, casual Chinese spot. They've got one in Wacky Wok New York Style Chinese Cuisine. My first question, and probably yours, was, "What makes it New York style?" The answer came from the host (who quadruple-tasks as phone order-taker, waiter and bus boy): "It's more intense, spicy and flavorful.
