Chris Hertz (St. Francis High, 2005) senior outfielder, California Lutheran University baseball: As Hertz continues to tear it up at the plate, so too are the Kingsmen on a quite a roll currently. Over a six-game win streak that began on April 9 and continued with a 7-2 Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference win over Claremont Mudd-Scripps College on Sunday, Hertz has batted .375 (nine for 24)

NORTHEAST GLENDALE — Glendale Community College men’s tennis Coach Bob MacKay has spent the past two months tracking how much progress his squad has made in between its two season meetings against Occidental College. Victories have been scarce for the Vaqueros during that stretch. Injuries and illnesses have mounted, forcing MacKay to shuffle his lineup. He offered a brief assessment Tuesday night after Glendale college suffered a 6-3 nonconference home loss to Occidental.

EAGLE ROCK — The grass-roots effort to block a proposed underground tunnel connecting the Long Beach (710) and Foothill (210) freeways coalesced onstage this weekend when a number of elected officials and scholars panned the project as wasteful and unwanted. LOS ANGELES — With its playoff hopes teetering, wide receiver/running back Kory Hamane stepped up to make the two biggest plays of the season for the Flintridge Prep football team Friday night. They came on consecutive plays and helped keep Flintridge Prep’s postseason hopes alive on its final drive. Hamane caught a fourth-down pass and then scored on a 10-yard run with 1:29 left to give Flintridge Prep a 24-21 Prep League victory against Webb at Occidental College.

Whether the Vaqueros won or lost, Sartoris gave detailed explanations from what he saw while serving as the college’s head coach from 1972-88.
