Pictures of people and buildings often intrigue oil painter Walter Hurlburt, who applies his own spin to them with his brush and brilliant colors. A photograph of a woman wearing a black hat in a newspaper ad for instance caught his eye. So he created a painting based on it, but he changed her hat to reddish orange and brought out the blue in her eyes by painting her blouse a vivid turquoise. “One little thing you change and it adds just enough to make it different,” he said.

With nature as her subject and God as her inspiration, Louise Forbes tries to project joyful and spiritual feelings in her oil paintings on wood. Her specialty is hiding surprise subjects incorporated into the natural grain of the maple panels. Wildlife and fantasy flowers are created in her exhibit "A Glimpse into Nature's Realm" continuing through March 6 at Descanso Gardens' Boddy House Art Gallery. The La Crescenta artist began her journey in art as a child, and thanks God for the talent he has given her, she said.

Rafael Vindiola has never been to Ireland but you'd never guess that by seeing his newest series of paintings, "Images of Ireland," on display at La Canada Flintridge Library. "I started studying the Irish history and I'd get an idea from the writing then I'd do the research on the area," Vindiola said. The collection of 17 oil paintings and one watercolor vividly shows the lush, rolling landscapes of the Emerald Isle as only one who traversed the countryside might know.

Vigen Sogomonyan's rich style is fascinating and captivating in its simplicity. His world is a dimension where dreams can transform into reality, a world created by delicate mixture of bright colors and deep shadows as well as smooth sensuous curves and surfaces which are lush and inviting. His imaginary characters are presented in exotic and colorful costumes while captured during mysterious and intriguing interactions, sometimes with unusual but symbolic objects. The artist uses intense and vivid colors to exude the perpetual turmoil which exists inside the human core.

Art class was in session Saturday, but there were no desks or whiteboards out on Honolulu Avenue, just artists showing their paintings and sharing their techniques with the public during the Montrose Art Walk and Sale. Artists are encouraged to demonstrate and talk about their techniques during the show, said Rose Gamble, administrative assistant for the Montrose Verdugo City Chamber of Commerce, which coordinates the event four times a year. “The purpose of the art walk is to bring knowledge and enrichment to the local community and to make them aware of the local artists who do beautiful artwork of the local and surrounding areas,” Gamble said.
