Art in the Vault presents "Men of La Mano," an exhibition featuring the work of Artemio Rodriguez and Jose Lozano, both of La Mano Press.  The show will open on July 1 and continue through July 30 at Whites Art Gallery, 2414 HonolulU Ave. in Montrose. Artemio Rodriguez was born in Tacámbaro, Michoacán, Mexico.  He is the founder of La Mano Press, an artist-run print-studio and workshop located near downtown Los Angeles.  Rodriguez is dedicated to the art and appreciation of printmaking.

GCC GRADUATES FIREFIGHTING STUDENTS Glendale Community College's Arroyo Seco Fire Academy will see its sixth graduating class of 36 students off at 1 p.m. Sunday in a ceremony at The Alex Theatre. Glendale Asst. Fire Chief Don Biggs will be the keynote speaker. GCC offers the Basic Firefighter Academy as an extended program on weekends to allow working students to attend. POLISH ART COMES TO FOREST LAWN MUSEUM The opening reception for "The Art of a People: Polish Expressions" will start at 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Forest Lawn Glendale Museum, 1712 S. Glendale Ave. The exhibit will consist of canvas paintings and multimedia presentations of the art of Polish-born artists Danuta Rothschild, Jerzy Skolimowski and Jan Styka.

Jenna Bordelon DOWNTOWN -- Popular artist Thomas Kinkade brought his message of giving to an eager crowd of admirers, armed with cameras and ready to be awed, Sunday at the Glendale Galleria. Flanked by his works, "English Countryside" and "Cobblestone Bridge," Kinkade made it clear to an appreciative audience his paintings are meant to spread happiness. "The only thing that will let darkness go away is to let the light shine," he said to a scattering of applause.

Artists show works at Descanso LA CANADA FLINTRIDGE -- With the New Year will come a new display at the Boddy House Gallery at Descanso Gardens. Carole Buss, Tenny Lim and Gerane Mooney will have works on display from Jan. 10 to Feb. 6. Buss, who often has exhibits at the Boddy House, will show her watercolor collections of seasonal landscapes. Lim has also been showing work at Descanso Gardens for six years, and in January will have her hand-painted porcelain, earthenware and stoneware on display.

WOMAN CELEBRATES 100TH BIRTHDAY WITH FAMILY Marie "Warren" Easton gathered her family around her to celebrate her 100th birthday recently. The party was held at her Glendale home where she has lived for more than 61 years. Fifteen of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren were there to celebrate her life. Some came from Colorado, Arizona, Utah and Northern California to be with her. Born on June 16, 1907, in Ft. Worth, Texas, Easton and her parents came to Glendale in 1920 where she attended Glendale schools and graduated from Glendale High School in 1925.

Finishing 2008, the Montrose-Verdugo City Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring a series of events that are open to the public. These events showcase the many artistic opportunities within the community. ?? Saturday, Nov. 8 : Artwalk From 9 a.m to 4 p.m. along the south side of the 2300 and 2400 blocks of Honolulu Avenue, local artists will be demonstrating and selling their one-of-a-kind artwork. This will be a great opportunity to do some early Christmas shopping in the beautiful city of Montrose.

The following information was taken from police reports: Alameda Avenue and San Fernando Road: A 39-year-old Burbank man was arrested Sunday on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol. Elm and Glendale avenues: A 19-year-old Glendale man reported Sunday that a car stereo and TV/DVD player worth a combined $650 were stolen from his 2000 Toyota Celica. 1400 block of Wabasso Way: A 54-year-old Glendale man repor- ted Sunday that oil paintings, jewelry, cash and a Persian rug worth a combined $70,000 were stolen from his home.

Ryan Carter In an ongoing effort to improve business along Brand Boulevard, merchants on the street will present an art festival Saturday. The Brand Boulevard Art Fest will be from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday along Brand between Broadway and California Avenue. The inaugural event will feature the work of more than 80 artists, who will display oil paintings and have arts and crafts for sale. The event will also include entertainment for children and Party Smart employees will offer face painting.

CABRINI LITERARY HAS FUNDRAISER The Cabrini Literary Guild will have its annual fundraiser "Flamenco Ole" today at the Oakmont Country Club in Glendale. The chairwoman is Marie Urrutia. President of the Guild is Carmen McClelland. The event begins at 11 a.m. with a social hour and viewing of auction items. There will be a silent auction, including gift baskets, original oil paintings and more. There will also be a money raffle. Entertainment will feature the La Sole flamenco dancers.
