Gretchen Hoffman It wasn't their first choice for the theme of this month's extended Montrose Harvest Market, but organizers of the Fall Swing Ball think a little boogying might be the perfect ending to a weekend filled with Oktoberfest oomph. The Montrose Shopping Park Assn. is hosting the Fall Swing Ball in conjunction with its first October farmers' market Sunday, one day after the area is transformed into a Bavarian festival by the Montrose-Verdugo City Chamber of Commerce's annual Oktoberfest celebration.

Those looking for an opportunity to jiggle to the Chicken Dance or who are seeking a frothy brew are invited down to Honolulu Avenue on Saturday, Oct. 6 for the annual Oktoberfest. This is the 30th year that Montrose has hosted the event. Activities planned include a Best Dressed Dog contest, bingo games and authentic German fare. Free admission. Oktoberfest begins at noon. For more information, visit www.montrosechamber.org.   The 2007 Town Council elections will take place on Saturday, Nov. 3 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Career Center at Crescenta Valley High School.

Darleene Barrientos Under the leafy trees shading Honolulu Avenue, 4-year-old Hayden Byrnes nursed a soft drink as his father, Sean, enjoyed a beer. Hayden and his father walked to the event from their home down the street to enjoy the huge variety of games and rides, like the Swinger, the Moon Buggies and Raiders and the Ferris Wheel. "They didn't have games like this before," Byrnes said. Saturday's 27th annual Oktoberfest in Montrose attracted an estimated 20,000 people to the fest of beers and bratwursts.

The Montrose-Verdugo City Chamber of Commerce recognized community leaders and installed new members at a mid-January dinner at the La Cañada Flintridge Country Club. Award recipients include Jenkins Properties Management as business of the year; Crescenta Valley Rotary as organization of the year; Mathew Matti of Re/Max Tri City Realty as business person of the year; retired Glendale firefighter Mark Whipp as peace officer of the year; Carolyn Bowman as educator of the year, and Chris Waldheim as volunteer of the year.

Glendale firefighters quickly extinguished a house fire in the 3400 block of Honolulu Avenue Monday, knocking down the blaze 17 minutes after units were dispatched. The fire appeared to begin on a fence, but it extended into the attic of the house, according to fire officials. Structural damage is estimated at $50,000, with $5,000 damage to contents. The City Council on Tuesday night selected Chang Y. Lee to serve on the city’s Planning Commission and reappointed Vrej Mardian to the Glendale Historic Preservation Committee. WHAT IT MEANS The terms for Lee and Mardian are three years.   The council agreed to co-sponsor the 10th annual Armenian Independence Day Festival in Verdugo Park. The festival is run by the Nor Serount Cultural Association, which aims to educate Armenian youth about their culture and seeks to bridge the cultural divide between Armenians and non-Armenians.
