GLENDALE - Heading into the home stretch of the regular season, the Glendale High boys' tennis team is seeking to solidify its doubles play. The Nitros might have moved a step closer to reaching that goal. Host Glendale won seven doubles sets Wednesday to earn a key 12-6 Pacific League victory against Crescenta Valley. “I think we played our best in doubles today,” said veteran Glendale Coach Bob Davidson, whose team improved to 9-4, 6-3 in league. “They were really outstanding and we know it's going to be a key for us to have a shot at being successful.

GLENDALE - Whether lining up for a serve or handling the outside hitting responsibilities, Min Kim came prepared to have an impact on the Crescenta Valley High boys' volleyball team. The junior outside hitter first got the Falcons off on the right note with a couple of aces before setting the stage on offense with one of his better efforts of the season. Kim finished with 12 kills and three aces Wednesday to lift visiting Crescenta Valley to a 25-17, 32-30, 25-18 Pacific League victory against Glendale.

GLENDALE - Instead of collecting the Bronze Bowl and gathering with it at midfield for a postmeet celebration, the members of the Glendale High boys' and girls' track and field teams opted for something a bit different. Shortly after the Nitros picked up the shiny trophy from the scorer's table, the Nitros took a victory lap around the new all-weather track at Hoover. LA CAÑADA - After recording a lopsided win in the first meeting earlier in the season, the Glendale High girls' lacrosse team expected a much stiffer challenge from La Cañada in a rematch Friday. Glendale anticipated La Cañada to be more aggressive with the Spartans having several key players back in the lineup who missed the first contest for various reasons. Glendale overcame a better effort from La Cañada and received a match-best four goals from Ariella Ruiz to register a 9-4 Pacific League road victory.

ARCADIA - On an afternoon of small surprises from both the Crescenta Valley High and Burbank boys' golf teams, a change among the Pacific League leaders wasn't shocking. Host Arcadia High jumped ahead of Crescenta Valley in the third league match and took control of its league title fate by defeating the short-handed Falcons, 370-394, on Thursday afternoon in a match in which Burroughs was third with 407 points, Burbank was fourth with 421 points and fifth-place Glendale tallied 443 points on the par-71 Santa Anita Golf Course in Arcadia.

GLENDALE - A season ago, the Burbank High baseball team and the Crescenta Valley High baseball team were neck-and-neck atop the standings and eventually shared the Pacific League crown. But a year later, with Burbank relying on an inexperienced lineup after graduating 14 seniors, Crescenta Valley looks as if it has the upper hand. The Falcons bested the young Bulldogs on Friday night at Stengel Field, 4-1. “Beating every team will make us feel good,” Crescenta Valley senior Michael Russo said.

PASADENA - Russell Caletena got to Brookside Golf Course No. 2 aware the conditions of the greens might not be too favorable for him leading up to Thursday's Pacific League golf match. Earlier in the week, the course underwent a round of aerification, a type of preventative maintenance that leaves small holes on the course designed to loosen soil. Caletena, a sophomore at Glendale, didn't seem to mind the conditions all that much. Caletena shot an even-par 70 to earn medalist honors in a match won by Crescenta Valley.

GLENDALE - The Hoover High baseball team learned something valuable in its game Friday against Arcadia. Hoover, which has been among the lower-positioned teams in the Pacific League in recent years, was not intimidated by Arcadia, which has been a league title contender for decades. In fact, the Tornadoes might just have received a boost in realizing they could play with the Apaches. Despite losing a 6-2 Pacific League contest at home, the Tornadoes walked away from the game encouraged and not at all forlorn.

ARCADIA - Having won its first five games of the season, it appeared the members of the Hoover High softball team had gained plenty of traction. In the first inning of Thursday's Pacific League road contest against Arcadia, the Tornadoes' streak of perfection skidded out of control. Hoover allowed nine runs in the opening inning and suffered a 19-1 defeat in a game called in the fifth inning because of the 10-run mercy rule. “Everybody on the team got a big dose of real softball,” said Hoover Coach Rich Henning, whose team finished with just one hit and dropped to 5-1, 1-1 in league.

GLENDALE - With new coaches occupying their respective dugouts, the Glendale High and Burroughs baseball teams have been eager to begin Pacific League action. The wait for the Nitros and Indians ended Tuesday, when the squads met at Glendale. Glendale junior starting pitcher Jack Porras grabbed the spotlight with a quality effort. Porras gave the Nitros a big boost, as he scattered seven hits in a shutout effort to propel Glendale to a 4-0 victory. Porras, a right-hander, needed just 74 pitches to turn back Burroughs in the first of two head-to-head matchups.
