LA CRESCENTA — Through the eyes of Crescenta Valley High boys’ basketball Coach Shawn Zargarian, it was the same old story. Only this time, it was written out against a perennial CIF powerhouse and the Pacific League’s strongest team. After starting out well enough, Crescenta Valley fell behind against four-time reigning league champion Pasadena and could never quite overcome the deficit, losing Wednesday at home, 72-57. “It’s our story all year,” said Zargarian, whose team fell to 8-7 overall and 1-2 in league.

Peter Fuertes PASADENA -- At the very least, the Glendale High softball team opened the Pacific League season on the right note with a 13-3 victory at Pasadena High Tuesday. At most, the victory could have served as a warning to the rest of the league not to take the Nitros likely. The Nitros (6-5 overall, 1-0 in league) were dominant for the most part against an overmatched Bulldog team without three of its starters, which were out to injury, in the league contest which was stopped after six innings because of the 10-run mercy rule.

SOUTHEAST GLENDALE — For the first 24 minutes of Tuesday afternoon’s Pacific League girls’ soccer match, Glendale High stood toe-to-toe with Pasadena. The Nitros traded shots with the league-leading Bulldogs and appeared they would give them a run for their money. But eventually, Pasadena’s crisp passing and aggressive defense proved too strong and the Bulldogs outlasted Glendale, 3-0, at Moyse Field. “The girls played hard,” said Glendale Coach Dino Barberia, who lost key players Sarah Mizuki and Melissa Sanchez for portions of the match due to injury.

SOUTHEAST GLENDALE — Having to open up the Pacific League portion of their schedule Tuesday night against the defending league champion, the members of the Glendale High boys’ basketball team took their medicine. There wasn’t likely a good taste to it. Normally, there isn’t when playing against perennial league powerhouse Pasadena. Glendale committed 21 turnovers and suffered a 74-51 home loss to Pasadena in a game the Nitros never led. The Nitros (4-8)

Despite tying Pasadena, 3-3, in the semifinal consolation bracket of the La Cañada Holiday Classic on Dec. 15, the Crescenta Valley boys' varsity soccer lost the contest on penalty kicks. The Bulldogs out kicked the Falcons, 4-2. With the defeat, CV fell to 5-6 overall. CV came back from a 3-0 deficit, with Alex Gruenberg scoring two goals and Leandro Bernhardt getting the third one, but Pasadena still prevailed on the penalty boots. In a consolation quarterfinal match on Dec. 14, the Falcons blanked Los Angeles Baptist, 1-0, on an unassisted goal by Juan Acuna.

PASADENA — One hot shooting half proved to be good enough for the Hoover High girls' basketball team. Carrying over a hot streak from the three-point line in its previous game, the Tornadoes staked an early lead and did just enough at the end to hold off Pasadena, 59-58, in Friday's Pacific League road contest. "In the first half, we shot the ball well," said Hoover Coach Jack Van Patten. "It's a law of averafes, it catches up in the long run." The long run, in this case, was a final quarter which the Bullgogs mounted a comeback bid after trailing by as many as six with 4:30 left on the clock.

LA CRESCENTA — When Crescenta Valley High senior Stephanie Ziemann intercepted a pass and glided to an uncontested layup for the first points in Monday’s Pacific League girls’ basketball game, it was most assuradely a foreshadowing. Behind a tenacious defensive effort, the Falcons ran away from visiting Pasadena in a 54-26 throttling at Crescenta Valley High. “Our defense was excellent,” said Crescenta Valley Coach Jason Perez, whose team improved to 15-8 overall and 7-3 in league.

Soccer can be a funny game under normal conditions. Throw in wind and rain and you can see just about anything happen throughout the course of a match. The Crescenta Valley High girls? soccer team found that out the hard way on Friday afternoon, as the Falcons caught a few unlucky breaks and Pasadena took advantage to record a 1-0 Pacific League victory. ?This loss, just unlucky,? said first-year Crescenta Valley Coach Heather Fraschetti. ?That?s the thing with soccer, you can dominate a game, make one small error and the other team can capitalize.

Despite nearly a two-week rest between games, the Crescenta Valley girls' varsity basketball team was not ready to start Pacific League play against visiting Pasadena on Tuesday. The Bulldogs stifled the Falcons' offense, never allowing them to score more than nine points in any quarter, and slid right over them, 57-23. CV, which fell to 9-6 overall and to 0-1 in league, will try to regroup when it will host Hoover in a 5:30 p.m. league contest today (Friday). The Falcons will go on the road for the next two league games, Glendale next Tuesday at 4:45 p.m. and Muir next Friday at 5:30 p.m. CV will then host Burbank Burroughs in a 7 p.m. nonleague contest next Saturday.
