Buck Wargo CRESCENTA VALLEY HIGH SCHOOL -- Going to a new school can be traumatic for any teen. When it's entering high school as a freshman, the anxiety levels can reach a fever pitch. Enter the student government of Crescenta Valley High School, which took charge to help students feel more at ease and help them get to know other kids. A 50-minute presentation of past years was replaced with a four-hour orientation that included eating Domino's Pizza for lunch and a mini pep rally with cheerleaders.

SOUTHEAST GLENDALE ? Horace Mann Elementary School Principal Rosa Alonso likens herself to the head coach of a team with its biggest match of the season starting this week. Students took a practice test Monday in preparation for the California Standards Test, the state performance assessment that measures academic proficiency and growth. Official testing starts today. But before delving into the one-hour practice test, students gathered in groups on the playground for the kind of pep rally that more often precedes sporting events.

NORTHEAST GLENDALE -- The Plaza Vaquero at Glendale Community College was full of music and cheerleaders Tuesday but it wasn't a typical school pep rally. To culminate a month of activities commemorating Women's History Month, GCC's United Womyn's Council hosted a pep rally for gender equality Wednesday. About 100 people attended the event, which included freestyle rapping and cheering from members of the UWC. Members waved pom poms and small signs that read "I am not a man."

USC pep rally at Americana The Americana at Brand will host a pep rally for the USC football team starting at 6 p.m. Monday, in anticipation for its matchup against Penn State in the Rose Bowl game on New Year’s Day. The USC marching band, song girls, yell leaders and mascots will all take part in the celebration at the shopping complex, which is owned by alumnus Rick Caruso. The Americana will have an outdoor stage set up for the event in its central park area.

Skateboarding activities night Verdugo Skate Park will host a night of activities Friday, including a movie about skateboarding. Skateboarders and skateboarding enthusiasts will be given pizza and beverages as they watch videos depicting skateboarding competitions. The night of activities is from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the park at 1621 Canada Blvd. For details, call Adam Porte at (818) 548-2786. ? Holiday closures in Glendale area All city offices will be closed Thursday in observance of New Year?s Day. There will also be no collection of refuse and recycling containers. All those with collection days Thursday and Friday will have their containers collected one day later during the week of the holiday. Group accepting applications Soroptimist International of Glendale is accepting applications for its Making a Difference for Women Award, which acknowledges women who, through their personal or professional activities, are working to improve the lives of women and girls.

It is survival of the fittest at St. James the Less Catholic School as students prepare for in the inaugural Survivor Challenge sponsored by Taix Workout and Extreme Boot Camp on Jan. 28. Instead of a traditional jog-a-thon, the school is creating an obstacle course for the students to run through as a timed event. The students will be divided into teams and each team will attempt to conquer the course together. The course is part of a team-building exercise that will teach the students leadership and teamwork as they work together to achieve a common goal.

Monte Vista families ‘cruise’ on by Members of the Monte Vista Elementary School sixth grade class and their families enjoyed a cruise to Mexico on the Royal Caribbean cruise line this past April. The trip was organized by Andrea Beatty of Village Travel and grandmother to children attending Monte Vista. When asked what their favorite thing was about the cruise, a unanimous “Everything!” was answered.   Carter offers lecture at Clark The Clark Magnet High School PTA hosted motivational speaker and writer Jerome Carter at their May 22 meeting on the school campus.

A marching band, cheerleaders and public officials stirred Mann Elementary School students into a frenzy of cheers Monday in anticipation of a week of standardized tests. Visiting speakers pushed the students to aim for a target of 825 points out of 1,000 on the exams, which begin Tuesday. “Let’s hear it,” Al Ferrara, a former Dodger outfielder and invited inspirational speaker, told the crowd of cheering students on the Mann blacktop. “We’re going to do 825!

DOWNTOWN — Hundreds of cardinal-and-gold clad USC fans converged at the Americana at Brand Monday for a pep rally that filled shops and restaurants with the echoes of snare drums and trumpets. Fans surrounded the large dancing fountain at the center of the shopping complex, often relocating to get a better view of the Trojan Marching Band, which was positioned in a corner next to the fountain and was visually obstructed by a stage set up for ESPN Radio and other permanent structures at the site.
