During the month of September, a photography exhibit by local artist Ron Dietel will benefit the La Cañada Flintridge Educational Foundation. Thirty of Dietel's stunning photographs are on display for sale through Sept. 30 at the La Cañada Flintridge Library, 4545 Oakwood Ave. The Foundation will host an artist's reception for Dietel on Saturday, Sept. 23 from 1:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. in the Library's Community Room. One hundred percent of all sales will be donated to the Foundation. Most of Dietel's exhibited photographs are of California landscapes, ranging from Cherry Canyon to Channel Islands National Park.

Edgar Melik-Stepanyan NORTHEAST GLENDALE -- One has to feel a sense of remorse for the Monterey Tow Little League District 16 Major Softball team. The 10- through-12-year-olds had absolutely no solutions for Photography as an Art, the top team in the Tri-Cities Tournament. Led by Ariella Guerra, who hit for the cycle, drove in seven runs and scored three times, Photography romped Monterey Tow, 22-2, Monday night at Scholl Canyon Park in a winner's-bracket final game.

On the morning of Sept. 11, 2001, Denise Bankuti's phone rang and the caller alerted her to turn on her television. In the days to come, as Bankuti watched the reports, she was moved by the decisions forced upon those in the World Trade Center, and by the responders who charged up the towers uncertain of their return. An artist since she was a girl growing up in Burbank, Bankuti, 60, took to her canvas in her home studio within days. “Every second you're watching TV, new scenes were coming up, new information,” she said.

The lush landscape and vivid colors found at Descanso Gardens are an inspiration for actress Angela Cartwright. A photographer since her parents gave her a Nikon camera on her 16th birthday, she now creates hand-painted photographs, enhancing black-and-white images by applying transparent oil paint. Following a successful career in television ("The Danny Thomas Show" and "Lost in Space") and movies ("The Sound of Music,") she took some time off to raise her children.

Ken Goldman was only 13 the first time he picked up a 2-by-4 rasp, a very coarse type of wood, and filed it until it resembled an airplane. “I’ve been hooked since then,” said the 61-year-old La Crescenta resident, who is showing his wood sculptures and photography this month at Whites Art Framing & Restoration in Montrose. All of his sculptures are unique, and every single one tells a different story, store owner Miguel Perez said. “It’s best for people to come and see them and enjoy,” he said.

Back in 1977, Dennis Reed read something that intrigued him: There once had been a vibrant society of Japanese American photographers, including first-rate modernists, but with the advent of World War II and U.S. internment camps, all of their work had been lost. “Nothing survived,” the photography educator and historian remembers reading in that article. He wondered about that. Reed spent the next few years researching the subject. He found that not only was there evidence of the work in books and surviving prints, but the work was exceptional.

Shoppers in the market for one-of-a-kind, handmade artwork, and families looking for daytime entertainment could satisfy both desires at the Burbank Fine Arts Festival next weekend. The two-day, open-air marketplace on June 21 and 22 will feature more than 100 artists showing their works, which will range from sculpture, photography and oil paintings to handicrafts like jewelry and accessories along San Fernando Boulevard from Magnolia Boulevard to Olive Avenue in Downtown Burbank.

New 10-minute plays performed in Studio Theatre The Glendale Community College Theatre Arts Department presents "Present Life: An Evening of 10-Minute Plays," as part of the college's 85th anniversary celebration, opening Wednesday, May 8 in the GCC Auditorium Studio Theatre. Additional shows are May 9, 10 and 11 at 8 p.m. "Present Life" is an eclectic mix of new 10-minute plays from notable playwrights with the theme of birthdays and anniversaries. Seating in the Studio Theatre is limited and there is no late seating.
