Mark R. Madler Mary Louise Largey has lived in the city for 80 years, but not until recently has she started attending an event that has been around longer than she has. Encouraged by friends Milt and Phyllis Fernandez, Largey started attending the Glendale Old-Timers Assn. Picnic at Casa Adobe de San Rafael for food, entertainment and door prizes. "They do all these things," said Largey of the Fernandezes. "They were being nice and asked me if I wanted to go."

Since 1906 the Glendale Old-Timer's Assn. has been hosting its yearly picnic on Labor Day to provide local people with a chance to see old friends and celebrate the community. And while a drop-off in attendance over the years worries some participants, association members at the 99th annual picnic Monday had hopes for a strong future for the event. "It's important because these are the men and women who made Glendale into one of the finest cities in the county," said Los Angeles County Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich, who attends the event every year.

LA CRESCENTA — In-N-Out patrons ran for cover Wednesday afternoon as flames ignited a small hillside fire on Lowell Avenue that crept up near the restaurant’s picnic benches. The fire started at 2:05 p.m., quickly consuming vegetation between the fast food restaurant and a home on Vista Court and Lowell Avenue near Foothill Boulevard, said Battalion Chief David Frelinger of the Los Angeles City Fire Department. The blaze may have started from a cigarette, he said, adding that an empty pack was found on the hillside.

Saturday?s first local community church picnic and outreach at Crescenta Valley Park showed that there are many ways one can go down a slip ?n? slide. There?s the face up, face down, or with all four limbs up in the air approach. Some opted for the face first approach, or the big wipe out approach, where you don?t quite make it to the end and instead drift to the side a bit, ending up on the grass. For some, stalling out was inevitable if not enough momentum was achieved. No matter what the strategy, all these people had a smile on their face, and the slip ?

Darleene Barrientos Laying large chunks of meat to roast over a picnic grill at Verdugo Park was just the beginning for Hagop Zolyan and his family and friends. Zolyan, of Pasadena, his best friend Kevork Ohannessian, also of Pasadena, and Ohannessian's brother-in-law, Gregory Tatulyan, of North Hollywood, all brought their families to enjoy the entire day at the park, for the sixth annual Armenian Independence Day Festival. Thousands of Armenian Americans descended on Verdugo Park, 1621 Canada Blvd.

On Saturday, March 31, National Charity League, Inc., Glendale Chapter will sponsor a 5K Walk-N-Talk to benefit two local organizations. Proceeds from the event will be donated to Twelve Oaks Lodge, a senior living facility located in Montrose and the Glendale YWCA,which has been identifying and meeting the needs of women and girls since 1926. Over two hundred NCL Patronesses and their Ticktocker daughters will participate together in the 5K walk which will begin and end at Brand Park in Glendale.

Verdugo Valley Baptist Church will hold its services on Sunday, Aug. 20, at Lower Scholl Canyon Park, 2899 Glenoaks Canyon Dr., Glendale, Sunday School will be at 9:30 a.m., followed by worship service conducted by Pastor Jesse Johnson at 10:30 a.m. Children's Bible classes are offered through the fifth grade from 9:30 a.m. until noon. Following the service, the congregation will have a good old fashioned Baptist potluck lunch. Pastor Johnson invites everyone who truly loves God, or who would like to learn more about Him, to gather at the lower site of the park's picnic area.

Ten Years Ago The Women’s Council of Verdugo Hills Hospital and Foundation marked its 25th anniversary with a special luncheon held at Caltech’s Athenaeum. Twenty Years Ago Members of Mt. Olive Lutheran Church in La Crescenta celebrated silver jubilee of ministry for their pastor, the Rev. Gerald W. St. John. Approximately 200 guests attended the potluck event, during which he was presented with a video cassette recorder by appreciative church members.

The Pasadena Pops Orchestra, conducted by Music Director Rachael Worby, will conclude its summer season with two delightful concerts titled "Brush Up Your Shakespeare (And Friends)" at Descanso Gardens on Sept. 10 and 11, beginning at 7:30 p.m. both nights. Audience members will be treated to an evening of music inspired by the written word - all while enjoying picnics and wine in the serene setting of one of the Southland's most cherished spots. Pasadena native soprano Juliana Gondek will join the Pops in favorites from "West Side Story," "Kiss Me, Kate," and Verdi's "Otello."
