For the second time in as many days, Crescenta Valley High's girls' doubles team of Viktoriya Shumakova and Jackie Dilanchyan had little difficulty continuing their late-season surge. Shumakova and Dilanchyan worked together to record another postseason sweep, losing just six games. Unfortunately for Crescenta Valley, it wasn't enough as its season finished Wednesday with a 14-4 road loss against third-seeded Santa Monica in a CIF Southern Section Division II first-round playoff match.

In earning a playoff berth out of the Mission League for the first time since 2002, Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy tennis Coach Ron Zambrano said the Tologs reached their ultimate goal. While the Tologs' stay in the postseason lasted one round, Zambrano wasn't disappointed. He sees it as a major stepping stone in shaping the program's future. “I've begun to see them play to their potential,” Zambrano said Wednesday after Flintridge Sacred Heart suffered an 18-0 road loss against third-seeded University in a CIF Southern Section Division I first-round match.

Though the Crescenta Valley High football team will not participate in the CIF Southern Section Southeast Division playoffs, there's still plenty of motivation for the Falcons in their season finale. Crescenta Valley will indeed be in line to have a say in which teams qualify for the playoffs next week. For the Falcons, they would like nothing more than to keep archrival Arcadia out of the postseason, while ending the season at .500. Crescenta Valley will have that opportunity when it meets Arcadia in a Pacific League game at 7 p.m. Friday at Arcadia.

GIRLS' VOLLEYBALL Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy 3, Chaminade 0: The visiting Tologs wrapped up third place in the Mission league and clinched a playoff spot Monday with a 25-21, 25-18, 25-15 win. The victory put Sacred Heart (12-12, 6-4 in league) into a tie with Sherman Oaks Notre Dame for third place, but Sacred Heart held the tiebreaker thanks to its two head-to-head wins over the Knights. “The girls are free from trying to make it into playoffs and now they can just play volleyball and enjoy the matches,” first-year Tologs Coach Ernest Banaag said.

CLAREMONT - Perhaps it was the postgame reaction of the Flintridge Prep football team on a sunny afternoon in Claremont that best signified just how far the Rebels have come in the span of just one year. Having hardly played their best, the Rebels were disappointed in the performance that added up to a dominant 40-13 victory over host Webb in their Prep League finale, but were still rejoicing in the history achieved with the triumph. Indeed, Prep has come a long way from a 2011 squad that had just one win, forfeited two games, went winless in league and would've gladly taken a victory of any sort.
