SOUTHEAST GLENDALE ? Motivation isn?t something lacking inside Burroughs High boys? track and field athlete Dustin Blankenship. Blankenship proved that during Burroughs? Pacific League dual-meet opener Thursday against host Glendale by winning two distance events and the pole vault event to spark Burroughs to a convincing 115-12 victory at Moyse Field. Not many distance runners would find the time to take part in the pole vault, but Blankenship, a junior, just might be the exception.

CLAREMONT - Plaques were not in short supply for the Flintridge Prep track and field program on what was a banner evening for the boys at the Prep League Finals at Claremont McKenna College on Thursday. The Flintridge Prep boys defended their league title, holding off archrival Pasadena Poly, 82.5-69.5, while earning both a track most valuable player in junior Alan Yoho and a field co-MVP in senior West Nowotny. “We thought going in we'd have a chance to win, but you have to still compete,” Rebels Coach Nick Ponticello said.

GLENDALE - A large crowd flocked to midfield at Moyse Field on Wednesday for yet another big celebration, punctuated by hoisting a trophy in the air. It's become a regular occurrence for the Glendale High track and field program, which continued its domination of cross-town rival Hoover. Backed by some impressive efforts from Lauren Hansen, Andrea Popescu and Mike Williams, Glendale maintained ownership of the Bronze Bowl. Hansen won two individual events and helped win a relay race and Popescu won three individual events to spark the host Glendale girls to a 95-28 Pacific League win against Hoover.

LA CRESCENTA - With the Crescenta Valley High boys' and girls' track and field teams both still in the running for Pacific League championships, every meet is vital for the Falcons. Crescenta Valley was determined to keep those hopes alive Thursday in a tri-league contest against Burroughs and Muir. While the Falcons were concerned about the Indians, who possessed some solid athletes, the Mustangs posed little problem because of a depleted squad. PHOTOS: Track & field event at Crescenta Valley High School   As it turned out, the Falcons only had to moderately worry about Burroughs, as they swept both portions of the meet.

LA CAÑADA - While half the Prep League was on spring break Thursday afternoon, the other half prepared for the second half of the season with a competitive league tri-league meet at La Cañada High that may have been more hotly contested than expected. In what may very well foreshadow a close Prep League championship later this season, the host Flintridge Prep boys defeated Pasadena Poly, 64-63, while the Panthers' girls exacted a measure of revenge by scoring 81 points in topping the Rebels (51)

Yoho won the 1,600-meter race in four minutes 35.11 seconds and Knowles was victorious in the triple jump Saturday with a mark of 44 feet 3 inches. While Gareth Weiss may not have won the pole vault Saturday, it was a historic runner-up mark.

Gareth and Barrett Weiss might be among the most organized teenagers around. They wake up in the morning and head to school to tackle a variety of subjects from English to mathematics. Then it's off to gymnastics practice before taking a couple of hours to practice their musical instruments. Somewhere in between, there's time allotted in their busy schedules to work on their pole vaulting techniques. It appears they've become adjusted to managing their to-do lists rather well, which is half the battle for the freshmen pole vaulters on the Flintridge Prep boys' track and field team.

LA CAÑADA FLINTRIDGE - Though the Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy and St. Francis High track and field teams lost in a Mission League dual meet Thursday afternoon to Alemany at St. Francis, the Tologs and Golden Knights opted to look ahead toward the end of the regular season. Flintridge Sacred Heart is looking for its athletes to gradually reduce their times leading up to the Mission League final in early May. While St. Francis showed some signs of fatigue while taking part in their fourth league meet in as many weeks, there may be good news on the horizon for the Golden Knights in their bid to get back on track.

NORWALK — James Knowles felt a sense of accomplishment before even running a race at the CIF Southern Section Track and Field Divisional Championships at Cerritos College on Saturday. As the only St. Francis High athlete who qualified for the meet, Knowles was just happy to be representing the Golden Knights. Turns out, he'll be the only Golden Knight competing in the CIF Masters Meet, as well, after placing ninth in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 38.38 seconds. "I'm going into Masters looking to set a personal record like always, make it into state and keep on going," Knowles said.
