GLENDALE — Experience and depth might be the best things to have in hand for the Crescenta Valley High girls’ track and field program. The Falcons have fielded an excellent cast of distance runners in recent seasons, some of whom have advanced either to the CIF Southern Section finals or the CIF State Track and Field Championships. Crescenta Valley has also strengthened itself in other capacities in its quest to wrest the Pacific League title away from arch-rival Arcadia after placing second last season.

LA CAÑADA FLINTRIDGE — Competing against juniors and seniors can sometimes bring out the best in a freshman. Drew Washington, a first-year athlete on the Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy track and field squad, couldn’t have picked a better time to realize that than while competing against one of the top teams in the Mission League. Washington picked up a personal-best time in a running event, helped her team win a relay and took second in a field event in Flintridge Sacred Heart’s 81-46 loss to powerful Harvard-Westlake on Thursday afternoon at St. Francis High’s Friedman Field.

LA CRESCENTA — Those who left Thursday afternoon’s Pacific League track and field dual meet between Crescenta Valley High and Hoover early missed quite an ending. Crescenta Valley picked up a 72 1/2 -54 1/2 victory against Hoover in the boys’ portion of the meet, but the final event proved to have all of the late-ending dramatics needed to have both squads talking about it more than 15 minutes later. Hoover remained undefeated in the 4x400-meter relay this season, albeit barely.

A great meet for Crescenta Valley last Thursday as the Falcons beat Muir in a rout on both the boys’ and girls’ sides. The boys’ team won, 69-58, on the strength of Zack Torres’ runs in the 1,600 meters (4 minutes, 30.4 seconds) and 800 meters (1:58.2). Torres also ran in the Meet of Champions in Walnut on Saturday, placing second (9:05.1) in the boys’ 3,200 meters behind El Toro’s Villalva, who broke the nine-minute barrier (8:59.5). Torres also helped fellow distance runner freshman Mike Duncan in the 1,600, helping Duncan pace for a 4:30.

LA CRESCENTA — For years, the Crescenta Valley High and Muir track and field teams have dominated the Pacific League by winning league championships and sending athletes to the state meet on a consistent basis. That might be the case again in May and into early June, but the Falcons have the upper hand at the moment when it comes to competing in league dual meets against the Mustangs. Crescenta Valley’s boys’ team got nine event victories to pick up a 69-58 win, while the Falcons girls’ squad got 10 wins to record a 78-48 win Thursday afternoon at Crescenta Valley.
