In the ever-evolving script for the 710 Freeway tunnel, the Burbank City Council this week opted to stay out the political drama, citing insufficient data on the massive project proposal. Their decision came despite a slew of opposition speakers who recanted the same refrains that have nagged at other city councils, most recently in Glendale. Armed only with unscientific projections and assumptions, the opposition camp to a proposed underground tunnel linking the 710 and 210 freeways has had some success in pushing elected officials from Glendale to La Cañada and the California Legislature into taking a premature stand against it. Truth is, a full environmental assessment on the impacts of the proposal hasn’t been completed.

SyrianaDo high gas prices make you angry? Do you vote, listen to talk radio, like discussing politics or read the newspaper? Of course you read the paper, or you wouldn't be reading my amazing critique. If you answer yes to any of my questions, I highly recommend seeing the political drama, "Syriana." If my questions don't excite you, at least show some personal responsibility and register to vote. "Syriana" is a fictional drama that tells the story of the USA's reliance on oil from Middle Eastern countries.

Four people pitched their canvass chairs on a recent day above the Foothill (210) Freeway, their gaze focused unwaveringly on the roadway below. Their mission: count cars. All of them. One of the counters, Leandra Alvarez, positioned her fingers poised over two rows of four keypads at the top of a clipboard, with keys for cars and two-axle, three-axle and four-axle trucks. She was charged with watching two lanes. “It's not that hard,” she said, her eyes fixed on the road.

Maria Garcia from Compton huddled around the 1,100-pound monument Wednesday afternoon with her cousins as they waited for a family member to finish a test at the adjacent Central Library. As they read the inscription, Garcia's cousin, Vanessa Santos, was shocked to learn that the young Korean girl sitting next to an empty chair represented nearly 200,000 Korean, Chinese, Filipino and other women who were taken as sex slaves by the Japanese Imperial Army during World War II. The slaves would become known as “comfort women.” “It's crazy to know that this happened,” said Santos, a 20-year-old from Torrance.

Sales tax increase is misleading Talk about deception. The April 1 sales tax increase was described as a 1% increase. This is totally misleading. The sales tax in our area has been for some time 8.25% of the purchase price of taxable merchandise. On April 1 it was raised to 9.25%. That is a percentage increase of the sales tax rate of more than 11%. How anyone could run our state $42 billion in the hole is inconceivable. Instead of raising taxes we need to cut government spending.
