GLENDALE — It had been nine years since the Flintridge Prep girls’ soccer team’s last league title, a drought that ended this year when the Rebels went 8-2 to capture a share of the Prep League championship along with Chadwick. Another achievement of even greater rarity in Rebels lore accompanied the league title win — the naming of Prep junior forward Brooke Elby as Prep League tri-Most Valuable Player, as voted on by the league’s coaches. “It’s huge,” Rebels Coach Esteban Chavez said of Elby’s MVP honor.

GLENDALE — Following a four-year absence, the Flintridge Prep girls’ volleyball team finally got back to the postseason. This season, the Rebels relied heavily on a trio to put them back in the playoff picture. Flintridge Prep advanced to the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division III-A playoffs after taking fourth in the competitive Prep League. The Rebels saw Marin Seifert, Casey Meurer and Tori Glebocki named to the all-league team as voted on by the league’s seven coaches.

LA CAÑADA FLINTRIDGE — The odds of winning an eighth consecutive Prep League championship likely evaporated in a big way for the Flintridge Prep girls’ basketball team on Wednesday night. The Rebels, who have grown accustomed to league dominance with an array of top defenders and quality scorers, haven’t found any flow or luck throughout much of the season. Flintridge Prep was thoroughly outplayed in absorbing a 46-23 league home loss to Pasadena Poly. No matter where veteran Flintridge Prep Coach Kenny Fisher looked, trouble brewed for the Rebels (9-10, 3-3 in league)

GLENDALE ? During a summer match, Crescenta Valley High's boys' water polo team found itself missing some players. Pasadena Poly had just finished up and its best player, Rusty Morris, decided to help the Falcons out, playing as a member of the team. Today at Pasadena Poly in the Panthers' and Falcons' CIF Southern Section Division VI quarterfinal match, Morris and the Falcons will once again meet, this time on opposite sides with a lot more that just a summer match at stake.

LA CAÑADA FLINTRIDGE — In recent seasons, the members of the Flintridge Prep girls’ volleyball team have struggled during the Prep League portion of their schedule. To be exact, the Rebels had won just one league match the past two seasons. In just two league matches this season, the Rebels have doubled their win total. With senior outside hitter Marin Seifert taking charge in the pivotal second game, Flintridge Prep rolled to a convincing 25-19, 25-16, 25-19 league home victory against Rio Hondo Prep on Thursday night.

GLENDALE — Flintridge Prep first-year track and field Coach Nick Ponticello could see improvement from his cast of athletes heading down the stretch in the regular season. Ponticello hoped that success would spill over at the Prep League finals. Ponticello guessed right. Five Flintridge Prep athletes won league championships at the league final Thursday night at Claremont McKenna College in Claremont. The Rebels’ girls placed third in the team competition, while the boys’ squad was fourth in its portion of the meet.

GLENDALE — The locations and sequence may vary, but in terms of the opposition, nothing has changed about the Flintridge Prep football team’s 2009 schedule from last year. The Rebels’ approach to the two phases of the season – the nonleague opening and the all-important league slate that determines playoff qualification — hasn’t changed a bit either. “We’re really young and we’re just going to try to use the nonleague schedule to get ready for the Prep League and build some confidence and hopefully some good execution and consistency as we move forward,” said Skaggs, who led the Rebels to the playoffs for the second year in a row with a 3-7 record after a third-place finish in league last season.

NORTHEAST GLENDALE — Mired in a losing streak as long as he can remember incurring during his 12 seasons at Flintridge Prep, Rebels baseball Coach Buzz Cook saw a shaky start against archrival Pasadena Poly characterized by fielding gaffes and baserunning miscues that was just the opposite of what he had hoped to see. “And it got worse from there,” said Cook on Friday, not long after his Rebels had succumbed to the Panthers, 16-4,...

LA CAÑADA FLINTRIDGE — Defensive improvement has been a constant throughout the season for the Flintridge Prep softball team. It’s helped put the Rebels in first place in the Prep League and in the hunt for a playoff spot for the second season in a row with three weeks remaining. However, Flintridge Prep encountered some defensive struggles at the wrong time in a 3-2 league home loss to Rio Hondo Prep on Friday afternoon. Rio Hondo Prep (9-5, 6-2) took advantage of three Flintridge Prep (6-7, 4-2)

NORTHEAST GLENDALE — Flintridge Prep’s upstart girls’ soccer team faced its toughest obstacle in the Prep League on Tuesday afternoon. Having already surpassed its league win total from last season en route to a first-place standing this year, the Rebels played host to reigning league titlist Chadwick at the Glendale Sports Complex. The Dolphins flexed their muscle to the tune of a 1-0 victory, but the Rebels also showed they can play with the league’s best.
