Crescenta Valley High School parents went from classroom to classroom during back-to-school night activities on Sept. 18, learning what lies ahead for their students this school year. Before meeting teachers, many enjoyed a barbecue sponsored by Prom Plus, the parent organization that sponsors an after-prom event at the YMCA. For the first time, Prom Plus has joined the Kiwanis Incredible Duck Splash fundraiser. Participants can adopt a rubber duck that will ‘race’ for prizes.

The chaos of the first week of school is over.            We at the C.V. Sun worked overtime getting out to all of our elementary schools, Rosemont Middle and Clark and Crescenta Valley high schools to provide a snapshot of how the first week went. Beginning on the cover and continuing in our Schools section, you will see how well our students (and parents) did, welcoming in the new school year. I’m still signing forms that the school has sent over, confirming contact information, medical background, etc. And I’m updating my calendar with Back to School Night events.

I’ve just about caught up on my sleep from last weekend. No, I didn’t go to prom with Crescenta Valley High School seniors and their dates. I was waiting for them after prom over at the Crescenta-Cañada YMCA at Prom Plus. This is the eighth year that I’ve been involved with Prom Plus. Prom Plus was started after a Crescenta Valley High School senior was murdered as she slept at an unsupervised, post-prom hotel party in 1991. Her death drew the community together to create a fun, supervised after prom event for CV seniors and their guests.

Saturday afternoon was a flurry of activity as young men and women across the Foothills prepared for the social finale to the school year – the Crescenta Valley High School senior prom. The prom was held last weekend at the Wallis Annenberg Hall near the California Science Center in Los Angeles. More than 700 prom tickets were sold to the formal event that started in mid-afternoon at the high school gym. But, prior to the formal festivities, Montrose’s Merle Norman was the place to be for finishing touches on the many princesses for a day. Kelly Shaftel, 17, a senior at CV High, was surrounded by family and friends as Merle Norman co-owner Kris Kline applied foundation and eyeliner to the young woman.
