Glendale police on Sunday arrested a 25-year-old Los Angeles woman on suspicion of soliciting prostitution while driving a stolen rental car, officials said. Police were patrolling about 8:39 a.m. an alley behind Glen Capri Motel on the 6700 block of San Fernando Road, where they found Tamika Smith in the driver's seat of the stolen Hyundai Sonata rental, along with her passenger, Alfredo Cruz, 49, according to Glendale Police Department reports. Cruz told police he had been looking for work outside of Home Depot on San Fernando Road, where Smith drove up to him and asked if he was interested in having sex, according to police.

Police are cracking down on prostitutes and pimps in a Sun Valley neighborhood that some residents call a "red light district. " Authorities say prostitution along Lankershim Boulevard has been a problem for decades. Business owners in the area complain that customers are being exposed to prostitutes. Places like Valley Mexican Candy say prostitutes frequently walk in during business hours. "Sometimes they tell us, oh they use condoms, can they use the restroom," employee Naahi Gonzalez said.

Five men were cited and released Thursday during an undercover prostitution sting in Glendale, police said. Few details about the sting were released, but it occurred between noon and 4 p.m. at two locations - one on Colorado Street and another on Victory Boulevard, according Glendale police officials. The men reportedly were arrested on suspicion of soliciting prostitution after engaging with female Glendale officers who posed as sex workers, police said. One of the five men was also arrested on suspicion of possessing drug paraphernalia.

A 21-year-old Elk Grove woman was arrested this week on suspicion of soliciting sex in exchange for cash to an undercover Glendale detective during a sting at a local hotel, police said. Glendale detectives were investigating possible prostitution advertisements on Backpage.com Monday night when they contacted Mallory Osta, who had listed her phone number in an ad, according to police. Osta, who police said went by the name Giana, allegedly told detectives she had just got off work and was available to hang out. After an undercover detective indicated he would only be available to hang out for 30 minutes, she told him it would cost $140, police said.

Amber Willard THORNYCROFT -- Two women were arrested on suspicion of prostitution at a Glendale motel. Undercover officers went to the Sakura Motel Thursday after arranging a meeting with a woman whose advertisement they found in a telephone book. While waiting for the first woman to arrive, officers observed several men coming in and out of the room of the second woman, Officer Todd Anderson said. After checking the room out, officers arrested the 23-year-old San Bernardino woman on suspicion of prostitution, a misdemeanor.

Amber Willard THORNYCROFT -- One woman was arrested at a massage business on suspicion of prostitution and two others on suspicion of permit violations. The women worked at Y2K Acupressure and Massage Therapy and were arrested Oct. 27 on suspicion of charges ranging from prostitution to operating a massage business without a city permit. The business is in the 1600 block of East Colorado Street. Hyun Chung, 47, was arrested on suspicion of prostitution after she allegedly accepted $50 in exchange for a sexual act, investigators said.

GLENDALE — Police are asking residents who see an unusual amount of foot traffic in their neighborhoods to notify them because of a recent arrest in which a 50-year-old woman was reportedly using her upscale house for prostitution. Police arrested Eva Marie Thielk on Sept. 12 at her three-story house in the 2500 block of East Chevy Chase Drive after she solicited sex acts from an undercover officer in exchange for cash, Glendale Police Det. John Balian said. Thielk had a special room set up for sex in the house, Balian said.

A Los Angeles law firm has agreed to represent the city of Glendale for free in its defense of a statue honoring women taken as sex slaves for the Japanese Army during World War II , the installation of which has been called into question by a lawsuit filed in U.S. District Court last month. This is the first time in at least three years that a law firm has represented the city on a pro-bono basis, said City Atty. Mike Garcia. "Obviously, there are folks who think the lawsuit doesn't have merit," Garcia said.

In October the News-Press published a letter in which I pleaded with the Glendale City Council and Police Department to stop wasting energy and our money on frivolous pursuits , but instead to concentrate resources on strict enforcement of traffic laws and removal of the homicidal maniacs from our streets. It is ironic that only a couple of days later, the paper announced that the police activated a prostitution sting operation in which they entrapped a few fools who solicited prospective streetwalkers who in reality were police persons, and that $150,000 will be spent to institute DUI checkpoints around the city.

A 57-year-old Glendale man was arrested Sunday on suspicion of robbing a prostitute, who he allegedly burned with a cigarette and shoved out of his car, police said. The man, Hamlet Sarkisyan, was taken into custody about 10 a.m. after officers discovered the woman's hair on the right side of her head was burned during a struggle with him, according to Glendale police. Officers were alerted to Sarkisyan by another motorist who was driving on Dixon Street and yelled from his vehicle that a man was choking a woman on Rock Glen Avenue, according to police reports.
