The traffic cops on the L.A. Board of Supervisors last Tuesday approved two changes in parking regulations dealing with local issues. The board limited parking on Ocean View Boulevard to two hours on the east side in a 70 foot stretch between 445 feet and 515 feet north of Montrose, where a street jog has produced what neighbors consider a traffic hazard. The restriction will apply between 7:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m., Monday through Saturday. The supervisors also approved a parking change on Mary Street between Ramsdell and Glenwood, to simplify trash collection.

The following information was taken from police reports: 115 N. Maryland Ave.: A parking enforcement officer reported Friday that a man punched him twice. 201 E. Colorado St.: A coach with the city reported Thursday that someone broke into two soda machines together worth about $700, and stole $60 in change. 700 block of South Glendale Avenue: A Montrose man reported Thursday that his 1998 Chevrolet Lumina was stolen. 200 block of Broadway: A 25-year-old Glendale man was arrested Thursday on suspicion of punching another man in the jaw. Ramsdell and Mayfield avenues: A 34-year-old man and a 30-year-old woman, both of Tujunga, were arrested Thursday on suspicion of possessing crystal methamphetamine.

MONTROSE — A 49-year-old man was in critical condition Sunday after he was struck by an SUV and thrown 70 feet while crossing a street here on New Year’s Day, police said. The Glendale Police Department is searching for the driver, who fled the scene after hitting the man about 7:30 p.m., Sgt. Dennis Smith said. The pedestrian, a Glendale resident, was crossing Montrose Avenue between La Crescenta and Ramsdell avenues when a car traveling toward Ramsdell slowed down to allow him to cross, Smith said.

It was a hectic day last Saturday for those in the Crescenta Valley High Instrumental Music Department. The day began with a car wash fundraiser from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. complete with dozens of student and parent volunteers. The car wash was held at the Crescenta Valley High School staff parking lot at Ramsdell and Community avenues. The money raised went toward the purchase of new uniforms and instruments. That evening, the CVHS Jazz Band performed for the third annual Big Band Swing Dance, which took place inside the cafeteria.

It was so impressive on Saturday (Oct. 6) to encounter members of the Crescenta Valley High School girls' volleyball team washing cars at the corner of Foothill and Ramsdell. As I first drove up, I assumed they were trying to raise money for their program. But no, these kids were giving up their Saturday and doing this work throughout the day to collect money for the victims of the Sept. 11 atrocities in New York. One of the coaches told me that the girls didn't have to be dragged into this project.

Ten Years Ago … Brutal Santa Ana winds hit the Southland, bringing gusts of up to 80 mph to the area where businesses and homes sustained considerable property damage. At the Crescenta Valley Sheriff's Station on Briggs Avenue a 75-foot tall pine that crashed into the main building was one of several trees knocked over on the property by the powerful winds. Twenty Years Ago …   Armed with a a revolver, a young man wearing a ski mask held up Dominick's Italian Restaurant in La Crescenta on a Friday night in January 1986 and made his escape with an unknown amount of money that he carried off in a brown bag. Thirty Years Ago … "Where Do We Stand Today as a Consumer?"

Registration session to sign up for the winter season of Falcon youth basketball will be held Sept. 26 from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. and Oct. 2 from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Crescenta Valley High School north gymnasium. Both girls and boys are welcome, and new players must bring their birth certificates to register.   The Southern California Ringers, an 18-and-under softball team, is looking for players for the upcoming fall and winter seasons. Pitchers, catchers and position players are encouraged to try out for the club.

Town Council elections on Nov. 1 Voting for the Crescenta Valley Town Council takes place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the library at CV High School on Saturday, Nov. 1. Ballots will also be cast for a community flag. All registered voters in the local unincorporated area of L.A. County can vote.   Pacific Standard Time returns It’s time to fall backward by setting your clocks back one hour for Pacific Standard Time, which goes into effect at 2 a.m. Sunday.

MONTROSE — A 49-year-old man died early Wednesday from injuries he sustained after being struck and thrown 70 feet by an SUV as he crossed a street New Year’s Day, authorities said. Montrose resident Joo Lee, who suffered numerous broken bones and brain trauma as a result of the impact, died about 12:49 a.m. at Huntington Memorial Hospital in Pasadena, police said. His sudden death prompted his wife, Kyong Lee, and two daughters Wednesday to urge the hit-and-run driver to come forward.

Geghard Arakelian Sheriff’s deputies and detectives blocked off the streets near Washington Mutual Bank in La Crescenta and brandished firearms after receiving an anonymous call reporting a possible robbery at the branch.
