Gareth and Barrett Weiss might be among the most organized teenagers around. They wake up in the morning and head to school to tackle a variety of subjects from English to mathematics. Then it's off to gymnastics practice before taking a couple of hours to practice their musical instruments. Somewhere in between, there's time allotted in their busy schedules to work on their pole vaulting techniques. It appears they've become adjusted to managing their to-do lists rather well, which is half the battle for the freshmen pole vaulters on the Flintridge Prep boys' track and field team.

Over the past 13 seasons, Todd Frost saw the Flintridge Prep girls' basketball team become one of the area's top programs. As an assistant for 10 seasons and head coach for the past three, the Rebels enjoyed a terrific stretch in which they won seven Prep League championships in a row from 2002-08, earned a trip to the CIF Southern Section Division IV-A final in 2007 and had a slew of players achieve All-Area, All-CIF and all-league honors....

NORTHEAST GLENDALE - There was much fanfare Thursday afternoon at Occidental College's Anderson Field. The winner of the Prep League finale between Webb and Flintridge Prep had a postgame celebration that included a Gatorade bath for the coach and a parent playing "Eye of the Tiger" on a bugle as teammates high-fived one another. But in a moment that could have been celebratory for Flintridge Prep Coach Buzz Cook, Cook instead was more reflective as he watched the events that unfolded across the field.

CLAREMONT - It was a day of tremendous efforts for the Flintridge Prep boys' and girls' track and field teams at Thursday night's Prep League finals at Claremont-McKenna College. The Rebels succeeded across the board as the boys won a team title and the girls captured multiple individual championships as well as qualifying several athletes to the CIF Southern Section Division IV preliminaries May 12 at Carpinteria High. "We had been undefeated at all our league meets and had a really good season, but I was still nervous," said Rebels Coach Nick Ponticello, whose boys' team claimed its first title since 2003.

PASADENA - Down until the final few races, the Flintridge Prep boys' swimming team was still within reach of the Prep League championship at Saturday afternoon's league finals. It left Rebels Coach Ryan Goto to wonder what could have been if his team had been error free and at full strength, as the boys settled for third place with 267 points. "There were a few mistakes we made along the way," Goto said. "We stumbled a bit and didn't finish as strong as I wanted to. Overall, the swimmers who actually came to the meet today gave everything they could to win and we just came up short.

LA CAÑADA FLINTRIDGE - Pasadena Poly boys' volleyball Coach Mark Mina admitted his team probably showed up at Flintridge Prep expecting a Prep League sweep on Tuesday afternoon. The Panthers almost got one. Performed on them, that is, by a Rebels squad that became ever more fired up with wins in the first two games and taking the third down to the wire. Michael Saeta simply wouldn't allow Poly to go down, however, igniting a late rally to win the third game before going on to finish with 51 kills in his team's 21-25, 25-27, 25-20, 25-22, 15-13 win that lifted the Panthers into a tie for first place with Chadwick with two matches left in the season.

Witnessing rockabilly originator Ray Campi in performance can be an unforgettable experience. Decked out in colorful, custom-tailored western wardrobe, letting fly with a biting vocal style reminiscent of a rebel war cry while balanced, mid-air, atop his full-size acoustic upright bass, one would never guess that the veteran singer-musician is fast approaching his 78th year. Campi has always been a bundle of contradictions, one who has released 60 full-length albums, shared stages with the likes of Gene Vincent, Conway Twitty, Bob Luman and Sonny James, played to massive audiences at European festivals but has also worked as bowling alley pin setter, Ferris wheel operator, lingerie salesman and, for 30 years, as a high school teacher in Van Nuys.
