Marshall Allen GLENDALE -- Effusing charisma, the Rev. Bonnie Rowsell offered motivational advice at Wednesday night's Glendale Church of Religious Science Empowering Prosperity workshop. Looking sharp in a skirt suit accessorized by a brooch that said simply: "YES," Roswell encouraged 20 debt-ridden attendees to free themselves from financial bondage through the power of positive thinking. According to the theology of Religious Science, positive life change is possible if people set their minds to it. This concept was central to the Empowering Prosperity workshop, a three-session, once-a-week seminar Rowsell teaches regularly.

The passing of the Rev. Bill Schirmer of the La Crescenta Church of Religious Science was a blow not just to his spiritual flock, but to the community at large. Schirmer died of heart failure Tuesday at his home in Glendale. He was 62. Schirmer was a spiritual leader who could be listed as one of the city's best assets. Beyond the respect he won from his parishioners for his wit, wisdom and boundless caring, Schirmer inflenced and inspired many more through his weekly cable television program, "Greater Good for You."

Rosette Gonzales Long lines, the biggest shopping day of the year and enough holiday cheer to maximize a credit card -- the holidays can be joyful, but for some but they can also be filled with stress and heartache. That's exactly why Reverend Bonnie Rowsell decided to deliver her sermon "Think and Laugh" at 10 a.m. this Sunday at Glendale Church of Religious Science, 2146 E. Chevy Chase Drive. "This is especially why I brought it up. We can make jokes while we're standing in line," Rowsell said.

Midweek Eucharist celebrated Wednesday GLENDALE -- A midweek Eucharist service will be celebrated from 11:30 a.m. to noon Wednesday at the First Lutheran Church. The Rev. Dinner, dancing and reflecting on a rich history encompassing 60 years was on the agenda for the anniversary celebration last Saturday night of the La Crescenta Center for Spiritual Living. Located on the southwest corner of Dunsmore and Santa Carlotta avenues, the church honored the special occasion with the festive event enjoyed by nearly 50 members, some of whom reside outside the area but still made the trip to attend. After the dinner, everyone sat in for a media presentation of all photographs, press releases and published articles regarding the church, collected and scrap booked over the past 60 years.

Rocky, a 3-year-old Shih Tzu-Yorkie mix, was one a handful of pets that received their blessings on Sunday — and a bag of doggie treats. Several dog and cat owners arrived at the Center for Spiritual Living in La Crescenta with their pets or photographs of their animals to be blessed by the Rev. Beverly Craig, the Rev. Steven Van Meter or practitioner Laney Clevenger-White. Nora Barsuk, 61, of Glendale, brought a picture of Rocky, adopted from the Glendale Humane Society.

Core Council Chairperson Stan Astrinakis has selected "Do You Hear What I Hear" as the topic on Jan. 28 at La Crescenta Church of Religious Science. The service begins at 10 a.m. Church school is offered for young people ages 4 through teens. The classes occur simultaneously with the church service. Child care is also available.
