Karen S. Kim SOUTHEAST GLENDALE -- About 400 occupants of Leisure Vale Retirement Home were evacuated Friday night when a fire broke out in the facility's laundry room. "It was a precautionary move," said Glendale Fire Battalion Chief Corey Creasey, adding that smoke did fill the first floor of the three-story retirement home. Ten Glendale Fire Department companies were called to the home, at 413 E. Cypress St., at 5:45 p.m. The fire was contained within 20 minutes.

Alex Smothers Two men were arrested on suspicion of assaulting two bouncers at The Mix -- the third incident to try the patience of local law enforcement this month. The bar draws a larger crowd, and is one of the more active businesses that sells alcohol in the area in terms of police responses, Police Sgt. Kirk Palmer said. The men, 22 and 31, were fighting with four other men when security officers tried to break it up, a police report said.

MARILYN CANFIELD Marilyn Canfield, 80, a longtime Glendale resident, died Feb. 6, 2003. She was born in Chicago. Her family moved to Glendale, where she graduated from Herbert Hoover High School, and attended UCLA. During World War II, she left college to join the Navy, and after her discharge returned to UCLA.. Prior to retiring, she was an administrator at the P.E.O. Retirement Home. She was a member of the First Congregational Church in Glendale for more than 52 years.

  Earl S. Smith Earl S. Smith, 90 years old, survived by sister, Margaret Schwane; brother-in-law, Jack Shwane of Glendale, sister-in-law, Lois Smith of Green Valley Arizona, also many nieces and nephews. Mr. Smith was born in Holtville, California attended Glendale schools and graduated from Hoover High School. Shortly after graduation he joined the U.S. Navy on December 7 th , 1941. He was stationed on the U.S. Vestal, a repair ship tied upto the U.S. Arizona and witnessed the bombing.

Jackson Bell After hearing about locals whose homes were damaged by the winter rainstorms, Howard Potter felt compelled to help them. "I would see all these pictures on TV of the destruction and everything like that," the 90-year-old Glendale man said. "It got to me, and I thought to myself that we should do something." Potter racked his brain and came up with the idea of collecting relief money at his home at the Windsor Manor retirement community.

Was born January 31, 1935 in Michigan City, IN and passed away on Wednesday, July 24, 2013 in Glendale, CA. He was 78 years old. At age 17, Frank joined the Army. During his 21 years, including a tour in Vietnam in '68, he was stationed in Germany, where he met his wife, Lisa. After Frank retired from the Army the family settled in Burbank, CA. He became a dietary supervisor and worked at different nursing homes. In the last two years he lived in a retirement home in Glendale. He made friends and became the most valuable beanbag baseball player for his team.

Marriage between seniors is a highlight among the various Valentine's Day events in the city.SOUTHEAST GLENDALE -- It's not easy finding love at any age. But for Ellen Crocker it came naturally -- even at 62 -- when she met 58-year-old John Wehnert. "I like younger men," she said of her resident neighbor at Leisure Vale Retirement Center. "I loved him at first sight." The two are getting married today, on Valentine's Day, at the retirement home -- something of a rarity for the seniors living there, administrator Polita Barnes said.

Former La Cañadan Fay Cummings, also known as Fay Miller, passed away at her retirement home in Santa Rosa on Saturday, Jan. 1, 2005, at the age of 97. She was the beloved wife of the late Howard Mead Cummings, who passed away in 1959. She was the loving mother of James and to his wife, Anna Cummings, both of Santa Rosa; and loving grandmother of Shane and Arlette Cummings. Fay was a longtime resident of La Cañada, where she was a member for 40 years of Delta Master Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi. She also was a longtime active member of the Glendale Women's Athletic Club in the golf department.

Janine Marnien His assisted-living facility needing too much financial assistance, Tony Talisse is again pondering what to do with the property where the May-Lane Motel once sat. Talisse, who bought the property in March 2002, had proposed building an assisted-living facility on the site. But after looking at the proposal from a financial perspective, it isn't feasible to see the project to fruition, he said Thursday. His original plan would have provided housing for active seniors who chose not to live on their own but did not require constant care.

The Verdugo Hills Sunshine Society was formed in the early 1930s with the goal of operating a home-like boarding home for elderly people of culture and refinement. Charter members James and Effie Fifield helped form the society with the specific intention of donating their home, named Twelve Oaks Lodge, to the group. The Fifields, from Minneapolis, wintered in what was then called Verdugo City for many years. When James Fifield died in 1933, Effie Fifield took over his publishing business.

GLENDALE — A 62-year-old woman who went missing from a retirement home in southeast Glendale last week was safe in a Los Angeles hospital Tuesday, after firefighters found her near the Los Angeles-Glendale border. Dyane Blackford was last seen leaving Leisure Vale Retirement Home on East Cypress Street at about 7 a.m. Thursday, Glendale Police Officer John Balian said. Officials were especially concerned because Blackford, who has suffered a stroke, has limited cognitive abilities and has difficulty communicating, Balian said.

A professional pianist from Thousand Oaks faces felony charges of extorting money from five Glendale retirement homes, two of them in Montrose. A Thousand Oaks man was released Tuesday afternoon from custody after being arrested on suspicion of defrauding five retirement facilities in Glendale, including two in Montrose. Glendale police arrested Neil Elliott Dorval, 47, Jan. 31 on suspicion of extorting money from Montrose Nursing Center and Mountainview Retirement Residence in Montrose and three others in Glendale.
