Producers of Shakespeare at Play are keeping a promise to one company member and fulfilling a dream of another with the production ?Richard III? at The Colony Theatre in Burbank. Actor Jeffrey Paul Whitman expressed interest in playing Richard III 18 years ago to Shakespeare at Play Executive Director Debbie Gates, and she promised if they ever produced the play, he could. This event is a special engagement of the company ? which regularly performs William Shakespeare?s works and other classic plays in the Burbank Unified School District and produces Shakespeare in the Park at Burbank?

The Burbank Public Library’s Buena Vista branch, together with the nonprofit acting group Shakespeare at Play, put on one of the Bard’s most popular plays — “Richard III” Saturday and Sunday evenings outside the library in Lincoln Park. The production was performed as part of Shakespeare at Play’s sixth annual Shakespeare in the Park program, though this year’s show, dubbed “Shakespeare Under the Stars,” was the first to be performed at night.

Two acting students — playing the legitimate and illegitimate sons of the Earl of Gloucester — crossed swords on stage Friday in a practice bout for a performance next week in an informal presentation for their parents. In the front row was instructor Nikke Doukas, coaching two student actors through Shakespeare's "King Lear." "Now, now, now — now I want to fight you," Doukas said. "Where do you think you're going? I want to fight you now, you traitor." A Noise Within, a nonprofit classical theater company based in Glendale, has been holding a heroes-and-villains-themed summer workshop for aspiring actors.
