Peter Samore LA CANADA HIGH -- At the beginning of the season, La Canada boys' volleyball Coach Kevin Boyke didn't envision his team earning a spot in the postseason. The Spartans did not not have a setter and were coming off a dismal 1-9 Rio Hondo League record the season before. Boyke, in his first season as coach, came in to see that his team had a sizable amount of height and quickness. However, the team was young--featuring only two seniors--and this might it might not have been enough to get into the playoffs.

From Staff Reports It's the vote that counts: More than three million Californians voted Tuesday to elect Arnold Schwarzenegger as their next governor. Voting hasn't pertained solely to politics, though. Take a look at the boys' water polo rankings in CIF Southern Section Division III, which is voted on by six coaches from the division. La Canada and Manhattan Beach Mira Costa highs share the top billing. That may seem strange since La Canada came through with a 5-4 victory against host Mira Costa on Sept.

LA CAÑADA FLINTRIDGE — Perhaps it was a perfect storm of misfortune for the Flintridge Prep softball team on Tuesday afternoon at Prep. Already faced with a first-place Mayfield squad undefeated in Prep League play, the Rebels were forced to play without starting first baseman and All-Area selection Emma Vine, who was doing school testing, and starting pitcher Denise van der Goot, who was dealing with a death in the family. It all added up to a lopsided 13-1 loss to the Cubs, in which Mayfield set an ominous tone with a two-run first inning and then put the game out of reach with a seven-run fourth.

GLENDALE ? A 3-0 start in the Prep League put the Flintridge Prep football team in good position to make the playoffs. Thanks to some shifting in the league standings last week, a strong finish will also be necessary to see that goal through. With bragging rights and tradition on the line, the annual rivalry game between Flintridge Prep and Pasadena Poly never requires any added intrigue to motivate the respective squads. ?You want to beat Poly ? that?s the game that everybody will remember down the line,?

NORTHEAST GLENDALE — From the first inning to the fifth — which marked the merciful finish — Flintridge Prep's baseball team struggled in every aspect on Tuesday afternoon. It was yet another frustrating outing in a season that has thus far been filled with growing pains, frustrations and dubious firsts. "They looked dead from the beginning of the game," said Rebels Coach Robert "Buzz" Cook after his team's nonleague 13-0 five-inning, mercy-rule loss to Buckley at the Glendale Sports Complex.
