Janine Marnien The La Canada Presbyterian Church has an early Christmas present for local residents: free gift-wrapping. Church members will line up outside Rite Aid on Saturday, armed with gift bags, wrapping paper, ribbon and bows. The event is meant to be a reminder of the true meaning of Christmas, team leader Linda Pearson said. "Our freely giving to them and their freely receiving it relates to God's gift to us," she said. "We have been blessed, and we would like to be a blessing to others."

Large complex just doesn?t fit into area In reference to the article ?Pelanconi residents start their opposition early? (Friday): I am one of the residents across from the park. Although we are only one block long we do consider ourselves a single-family neighborhood and a 300-unit apartment does not fit into a residential neighborhood. As it is, both sides of Cleveland Road are always filled with cars belonging to people in the park. But they are gone at night. An apartment that large will add pollution, noise, traffic and parking will really be a nightmare.

A closer look reveals flaws in proposed Town Center Regarding the proposed Americana at Brand (aka retail and more retail, theaters and more theaters, and traffic and more traffic), and to answer Kenneth Martinez's response to my May 22 submission: Kenneth, you may consider Target "upscale," however, I wonder why even Mr. Caruso didn't include it in the Grove. Comparing the proposed Americana at Brand with the Grove is still like comparing apples with oranges.

CITY HALL — The City Council on Tuesday paved the way for lease negotiations with the Museum of Neon Art, voting unanimously to move forward with talks on moving the Los Angeles-based nonprofit into a city-owned building on South Brand Boulevard. The vacant building at 216 S. Brand Blvd., which once housed a Salvation Army branch and a Rite Aid, would give the museum a new permanent location to showcase its large collection of vintage neon signs and contemporary neon art after using a temporary spot in downtown Los Angeles for about two years.

Ryan Carter Some business owners in the heart of the proposed Town Center development said Tuesday that the plan to relocate them was rushed. "It's a pretty sloppy job," said Pamela Schmidt, an attorney hired by Cort Furniture Rental, one of several businesses between the 100 and 200 blocks of South Central Avenue and South Brand Boulevard that will be moved to make way for the 15.5-acre retail and residential village. If approved on March 30 by the City Council, construction on the center could begin by summer.

That was the experience for La CaƱada mom and former schoolteacher Julie Olson, who was a bit skeptical when she received that Monday morning phone call a few weeks ago. “I truly didn’t believe it,” Olson said.
