Alecia Foster DOWNTOWN -- Glendale Fireman Scott French has been there. Four years ago, he and colleague Bill Jensen were seriously burned fighting a fire in Malibu. Both recovered, but it took a lot of work -- both physically and mentally. "It's a big, emotional roller coaster," French said. It also often involves keeping up with a number of hospital bills, the 19-year veteran firefighter said. That's where the Firefighter's Quest for Burn Survivors comes in. The nonprofit organization was formed in 1996 to help burn victims.

It might not seem at first glance to be a hot night spot, but for much of the past year the Rusty Pelican has been steadily gaining a reputation as a great place to hear live jazz on weekend nights, thanks to the superlative sounds of 2AZZ1 and the Body and Soul Band and the Eric Byak Band.

Paul Andersen Brooke Ramel smiled at the thought. "I figure," she said, "that I've been passing by this place every day for the last six years, maybe more. Now, finally, I'm going to see what it is like to work near home. I think I'm going to like it a lot." For the next four Saturdays, Ramel, a Montrose-based singer/songwriter who has drawn comparisons to folk/pop star Jewel, will appear at the Rusty Pelican in Glendale. And rather than just playing solo with her guitar, as she often does, she'll be fronting a trio, though it will change from week to week.

Peter Fuertes After winning a non-title featherweight bout in San Antonio against a boxer considered to be one of the best, pound for pound, in the world, Manny Pacquiao received a hero's welcome once he returned home to the Philippines. Though the surroundings Wednesday were a bit more subdued as he held a congratulatory news conference at The Cove at the Rusty Pelican restaurant in Glendale, Pacquiao was honored to be in the presence of the Filipino Americans who came out to see him. "I feel proud of myself, and my country, to represent the Filipino Americans as a fighter," said the soft-spoken Pacquiao, who originally hails from Bukidnon in the Philippines.
