Ryan Carter LA CRESCENTA -- The Crescenta Valley Town Council will host an Arbor Day Celebration at Two Strike Park and dedicate the ceremony to young people from the community who have died. The ceremony will be held at 10:30 a.m. March 18 at Two Strike Park, 5107 Rosemont Ave., in La Crescenta. A deodar cedar will be planted. Families who wish to have their child's name read during the morning ceremony and included on a memory wall in the La Crescenta Library should contact Patty Steur at 957-1877 or Danette Erickson at 249-9577.

It could be a test drive like no other. The Ultimate Drive for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation is coming to Glendale. It will be held on Oct. 17 at the Pacific BMW dealership, 732 S. Brand Blvd. The event offers test drives in new BMWs. For each mile of the drive, BMW will donate $1 to the foundation for research, education, screening and treatment. The test drives will depart from the dealership. Other BMW dealerships in Los Angeles County will take part in the October campaign.

Glendale business owner receives 'Entrepreneur of the Year' award LOS ANGELES -- Glendale businesswoman Adrienne Morea, president of Atlas Homewares, was named as a Los Angeles 2003 Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year. Morea, whose business sells artistic home wares, received the award at a gala event Tuesday. Judges awarded Morea the honor based on her attention to detail, approach to business competition and the quality of her designs. Morea's award was for Manufacturing Entrepreneur of the Year.

Thursday's coffee with the mayor DOWNTOWN GLENDALE -- Mayor Rafi Manoukian's monthly "Kafi with Rafi" will be Thursday at the Glendale Farmers' Market. The event starts at 9 a.m. in front of the Java City Coffee Shop where residents can discuss issues and concerns with Manoukian without taking a trip to City Hall. Admission is free and the public is welcome to attend. The meeting will be Manoukian's last before the City Council appoints a new mayor following today's elections.

YWCA gets foundation grant GLENDALE -- The Glendale Community Foundation has given the YWCA of Glendale an $8,000 grant for its Domestic Violence Project literacy program. The endowment makes grants from the earnings of its invested contributions every two months to local nonprofits in the Glendale area. Ryan Carter County sets up SARS hotline GLENDALE -- A hotline has been set up to obtain free information about Severe Acute Repiratory Syndrome, or SARS.

Dreier's office to hold office hours LA CANADA FLINTRIDGE -- Staff assistants for Congressman David Dreier (R-La Crescenta) will be on hand to talk to constituents from 9 a.m. to noon May 21 at City Hall, 1327 Foothill Blvd. Constituents are encouraged to bring along letters and records related to issues they want to talk about. Dreier's district includes La Crescenta, Montrose and La Canada Flintridge. Ryan Carter Descanso Gardens gets a purple face-lift LA CANADA FLINTRIDGE -- Descanso Gardens is concluding its two-month festival of flowers with a tribute to violets entitled "Majestic Violets."

Schiff introduces tribunal bill GLENDALE -- A bill that would grant the president power to establish military tribunals to prosecute suspected al Qaeda terrorists who are not U.S. citizens, residents or prisoners of war has been introduced by Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Glendale). Under the bill, the Secretary of Defense would consult with the Secretary of State and the Attorney General to develop rules and protocol for military tribunals. Suspects would have the right to be present at a military trial with counsel and to all necessary means of defense.

Ryan Carter Glendale resident Linda LoRe and her husband, Steve Starleaf, both know a little about restructuring. LoRe has done it as president and chief executive officer of Frederick's of Hollywood and Starleaf has done it at the Burbank Tennis Center. Last week, the February sales results of Frederick's showed the highest February revenue ever for the company, LoRe said. And the company estimates that it will exceed planned revenues for August 2004 through July 2005 by 55% to 60%. LoRe did not disclose the actual numbers because the company is not publicly held, she said.

Frommer show to focus on high drug costs GLENDALE -- Assemblyman Dario Frommer (D-Glendale) will discuss skyrocketing costs of prescription drugs on his cable show "Capitol Connection with Assemblyman Dario Frommer," which airs at 9:30 p.m. Thursday on Charter Communications Channel 25. The 30-minute show will focus on how to deal with the high costs. Guests will include Joan Lee, a representative from the senior citizens group the Gray Panthers, and Richard Pan, a pediatrician from Sacramento.
